This Dell Plus 16 stands out as a strong spec play for the money, especially with 32GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 1TB SSD. The Ryzen AI 7 350 and NPU also make it appealing for local AI tasks, and the USB C ports support DisplayPort output with 4K at 60Hz. The main drawbacks are the soldered RAM with no upgrade path, modest 300 nit brightness, and a 60Hz 1920 by 1200 panel. Open box condition can be excellent, but missing chargers and other condition surprises have shown up.

  • Buyers comfortable with fixed memory, because the LPDDR5 RAM is soldered and the machine is still considered a strong value if 32GB is enough.

  • Students needing a fast everyday laptop, because 32GB RAM and 1TB storage make it feel well-specced for the price.

  • People running local AI models on a laptop, because the Ryzen AI NPU can run smaller LLMs with decent performance.

Open Boxes [bestbuy.com] (YMMV) available:
  • Excellent - $729.99
  • Good - $704.99
  • Fair - $677.99

https://www.bestbuy.com/product/d...ition=fair
Now the price is $614 for fair condition, $641 for good condition, and no excellent; store pickup only. No sure what is Best Buy open box sales approach, it may drop again

I was able to grab the one in excellent condition for $666 a few minutes ago. I had to purchase it through the BB mobile app as my desktop version said unavailable.

Excuse my ignorance but in the world of DDR5 RAM, who is worried about RAM modules being soldered in? 🤣

There is one for pick up at my local BB, but I don'[t need another laptop for now... is this a buy-it-now-think-later deal?

Tempting as there is a Good condition one about 30 min away. I got my son a Omnibook 5 flip open box (good) from BestBuy last month and besides a few smudges it was just fine. Overkill for a school laptop, but for $240 pricetag I couldn't resist.

It amazes me how many people say soldered RAM is "no-go". Almost every non-gaming laptop has soldered RAM. So which laptops are a "go" for you? Certainly nothing thin and light. Why people look at these laptops like they might have SODIMM slots is beyond me. Plus, have you looked at the price of SODIMM's? If you did, you'd see you probably wouldn't buy them anyways.
To be fair, you only have to go back 6-12 months for most of what you said to be hogwash. At this point, I think you're mostly right, but I still mourn the death of cheap upgradeable computers.

good deal considering the specs and the ram. the ram is lpddr5 so it's soldered so you can't take it out and transfer to a new laptop, nor upgrade, nor can you sell it if the laptop breaks.

personally I'd rather have interchangeable ram, it's more important than ever given how expensive it's gotten. but if you're cool with it, enjoy your laptop.
Today you won't find lpddr5 interchangeable ram, except for one or two laptops. Only ddr5 and below is interchangeable, which is considerably slower and consumes more power than lpddr5.

Where did I say I was opposed to a gaming laptop? Where did I say I require/desire something lightweight and slim? Where did I say this is as much as I'm willing to spend on a laptop?

Thanks for the tip on identifying laptop RAM; the rest you could've kept to yourself, or I dunno, maybe told some of the squirrels at your local park?
I never said you were opposed to gaming laptops. I stated that almost only gaming laptops had SODIMM sockets. Since soldered is a "no-go" for you, logic says you should be looking at gaming laptops.

Yeah, the specs is decent for most used, but 300 nits is indeed the real con for me. I plan to carry it around like my phone and tablets and when you are outside, higher nits is really important as I have some decent phones and tablets that I can't use outside. Just because of that, I ended up only carry around my main phone ( 2000 nits ) and my Lenovo tablet ( about 600 nits ). If I decide to carry a laptop, it has to be at least 600 nits like my tablet.
