To switch from front to back measurement, you MUST use the app. There is no "on unit" switch, which makes this impractical. You can't make a change on the fly.
"How to switch:
Connect the device to the Mijia (Mi Home) app via Bluetooth
In the app settings, you can toggle between measuring from the front edge or the back edge of the device
This is confirmed by the manufacturer in the product Q&A section."

Absolutely wild we're in an era where putting bluetooth on a $20-30 product and requiring an app is being chosen over a frickin button. This reeks of a data harvesting scam.
Here's a reliable, easy to use, easy to read laser distance measure that takes standard AAA batteries and is still reasonably compact:

They occasionally go on sale for ~$35.
This is the one I use at work. I also have an older Bosch LDM that has held up for 15 years, and has even gone through the wash. (Had to open it up but once dried, it still reads accurately.)

This one for $29 but with replaceable batteries and no need for app. Looks like it goes down to $25 often with lowest price of $21.50 in 2025.
