This citric acid is a versatile cleaner for espresso machines, kettles, washing machines, dishwashers, and rust or hard water buildup, and it also doubles as a food ingredient and preservative. It is described as gentler than vinegar on rubber seals and useful in dishwasher rinse cycles for clearer glasses and fewer deposits. The deal math is strong, with the second bag free and Subscribe and Save bringing the price under $8 or to about $3.52 per pound on larger buys. Keep it away from OxiClean in the washer, since that combination is called out as ineffective.

Common Questions (5)

  • It works as a descaler for espresso machines and electric kettles, and it's also used for washing machines and other appliances. A small amount can be run through a washer cleaner cycle, and it helps remove hard-water deposits and soap scum.

  • Citric acid should not be mixed with OxiClean if the goal is a simple washer clean, because the two are alkaline/acidic and can neutralize into sodium citrate rather than boosting the cleaner. Baking soda plus citric acid produces sodium citrate and CO2, which can still help as a water softener and chelating agent in some DIY cleaners.

  • The deal requires adding two bags to the cart so the second one is free, making the price effectively for one bag. With Subscribe & Save, the 4 lb bag reportedly drops to under $8, and a larger 5 lb option can reach about $17.99 with max S&S.

  • It can work as a cheaper rust remover than store-bought products, and it is also used in food and drinks as a lemon substitute, preservative, and ingredient in dips.

  • Yes. A half teaspoon in the rinse cycle can help keep glasses clearer and reduce hard-water deposits in hard-to-reach dishwasher parts without interfering with detergent.

good to know, science always ruining everything.
True...sort of, since they essentially cancel each other out pH-wise, but citric acid and an alkaline (including Oxiclean) do create more than water. Citric acid and baking soda create CO2, and sodium citrate Na₃C₆H₅O₇.

Sodium citrate (which you can buy as a powder on Amazon) is a common ingredient in commercial degreasers/cleaners. Sodium citrate is a water softener and chelating agent which help the soap lather and rinse off, and it's also a pH buffer. As a buffer it helps keep the cleaner from damaging material by being too acidic or alkaline. So while it doesn't "boost" or make the cleaner stronger, sodium citrate can help a cleaner work better.

Citric acid and Oxiclean also create sodium citrate, but I don't know how much, and I'm not a chemist and have no idea how whether it would be beneficial in a particular DIY recipe. The good news is it's apparently not dangerous if you do experiment with it.

Was this a coupon on the page at the time? Id love to get this deal now. Its prime day and I cant even get better than 2lbs for close to $10
No, it was just a deal with instructions to add 2. Unfortunately, it's long dead as far as I can tell. With max S&S and buying 5 lbs you can get that to $17.99 ($3.52 per lb or 22¢ per ounce) https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Origi...B01IO4E2OS

I have the 2lb in my S&S cart for 15% , think it comes out to $4.14 a pound which I know is a little more than buying 5lbs as you mentioned. Iherb has Vitamatic 5lb $19.60 after coupon which is not good but Cap1 is promoting them today so I have 40% at the moment, usually they send email before the day ends with even higher, plus 10% on Chase . Only issue is I need to get some other stuff to hit $30 to avoid shipping. Definitely prefer Amazon to IHerb
