An absolute must-own for the PS5, grueling difficulty notwithstanding. Every frame is gorgeous, the gameplay exquisite, and the story is a stunning combination of existential and cosmic horror. My utmost recommendation.

One of the best games of all time. An air-tight masterpiece.
My only complaint about Returnal is the nonsensical ending(s). They resolve nothing and feel more confusing the more of them you unlock.
I wholeheartedly disagree. The endings are very poignant and meaningful, but they are purposefully disjointed as the story was written in fragments and jumbled up to allow you to draw your own conclusions. The story was one of my favorite I've experienced in a modern game, very Lynchian, very dark.

I liked Returnal so much I got the platinum on PS5; I then bought it on Steam a month or so ago. I ended up beating the game with only 2 deaths. I think I am an OK gamer, but I also think that game isn't that hard when you learn how to play it.
When you pick up a gun and you see an unlockable trait, it is permanently unlocked on the weapon, so always try to unlock traits on a gun. If you unlock enough traits on a really good gun like the electropylon driver or the tach carbine, you start shredding biomes and bosses. There are also ways to easily get extra lives if you die: the astronaut from the shop or the chamber.
Just thought I'd post that for anyone struggling with the game, it starts getting truly fun once you aren't dying constantly 🤣. The number of people who gave up on this gem or never tried it has to be off the charts; it makes me a bit sad because it's my favorite PS5 game. I also agree; I feel like the story and endings are a chef's kiss, WAY better than Saros! (Awesome game too, just not as good as Returnal IMO).

I think it's a beautiful game but I cannot get beyond the first stage. I thought I was an okay gamer until I played this game. I'll try again and follow your pro tips

I agree @Wabajak13 the story was not spelled out but did have some closure. I felt it was a much better story than Saros and the hero Selena was much easier to root for. I felt compelled the whole game to figure out what happened to her. I did not have near the connection to Saros/Arjun. (combat aside I think Returnal is the better game)

Once you pass a certain threshold (which is the 1st stage for many) you have a much better time. You'll get into a groove and start to understand how to win beyond just a skill issue using careful planning with pick ups/routes. Give it another try and it'll be worth your while!
I played this for like 10hours got bored. It was repetitive as fk. It's basically 3d dead cells without all the different weapons. Honestly I was hoping for a bit of horror but it's not. I got ps plus premium so I played it without paying for it but if I paid for this game I'd be annoyed. Wait till it's $5 even tho I think PlayStation will probably give it away for free one of these months.
