My city provides a free bin like this (though red) for free based on the contract they have with our local waste removal company. You can also upgrade to bigger cans. I'm not convinced that it all doesn't go to the same landfill but not much I can do there.

My local waste removal company provides bins like that and the guys still manually empty them into the trucks. They also offer an upgrade to a full size can for recycling, but even those trucks are the old trash trucks where the guy has to hook up the can to the back of the truck to get dumped, not like the trash which is all the in-cab remote setup.
