I've read some places where they say it's not true and others where they say it's true. IDK what to think. I tend to stick with the 8s. You have to replace them often enough anyway.

I've been using MERV 11 or 12 in my new 90% + furnace since 2005 and it has never smoked. I quit smoking 10 years ago.

It's what ill informed people say when they are too lazy the do research on a particular product. There probably are crappy merv 12 filters that are too restrictive and bad. Project farm did a test on a bunch of filters including a few different 3m filters. 3m came out on top for filtration and air flow when dirty.

The Costco link gives you the option of REGULAR or SLIM fit. I've never seen this option before. If you click on the SPECIFICATIONS tab it shows you which model air filters are for each size and fit.

Totally agree with this. It is all about common sense IMHO. I personally think a lot of this stigma exists because HVAC pros have seen just about everything when it comes to service calls and more often than not they find an ill-maintained HVAC unit where someone has let the filter go too long and/or don't understand the variables that go into maintenance cycle times (people, pets, filter MERV, pleats, and width). I personally setup reminders in our Ecobee thermostats to change out the filters on a regular basis. We have a large dog that sheds amazing quantities of hair so 1 inch filters get changed monthly and 4-5 inch filters every 6 months. I use good name brand high pleat-count filters MERV 11-12 and have never had an issue with our 19 y/o Trane units. If you hold the filter up to a light and cannot see the light source you likely have waited too long IMHO.
