I bought one a while back $15 any contact tester will work same make sure it's over 50 volts or you get false readings on nuetral take out batteries when not using as after 6 months they leak especially rayovac
I had energizer batteries in it for 2 years no issues.

I use Energizer Ultimate Lithium for long term storage. "Guaranteed" not to leak.

But you're right it's better to remove the batteries, as the spring tension may deform the tool.

By the way $25 feels expensive for what this is.
