Can you get away with just having one of the newer iPhones that have built-in satellite features? It does sound like these dedicated devices are more rugged and better battery life if you intend to be off the grid for extended periods.

To put it bluntly, I would trust a dedicated sat device in an emergency over the iPhone feature (in battery life, connectivity, and ruggedness). If I was doing something where my life could be put at risk, I would be spending the money on a dedicated purpose made device. Would an iPhone work for basic comms? Probably. Would I want to rely on it in a life and death situation? Probably not.

For casual hiking, yes; but having also tried iPhone messaging off the grid, it can be inconsistent - and you're relying on a fragile device. Also, many of these dedicated messengers work worldwide/in the ocean, vs an iPhone can only provide satellite messaging in certain countries.

iPhone use's spots satellite system. So same service. iPhones batteries do not last as long.

I have been a spot x Bluetooth user for about 8 years. Yearly service with SAR. I use a Garmin GPS when in the field. I would never trust my phone for more than a few hours. I like having a dedicated device.

Garmin really messed things up when they purchased in reach and locked down the iridium Sat network. They then bought the SAR company that spot originally used.

Garmin has a better day network that does not have the limitations that spot has. They also have a huge premium. Spot has 14 free messages with the spot x that you can predefine. That's amazing and I can say what I want in most cases. But I can text and receive any as well.

Everybyear I evaluate going to Garmin. My contract with spot is up in August. My total isn$230 a year for plan, insurance, device replacement, and Search and rescue.

These satelite texting devices are obsolote now that elon's starlink is available to consumers.anyone with a modern cell phone from 2021 and up on tmobile already has this for free. Maybe other cell providers but i have tmobile i get flawless texting services while camping and desert trekking. Literally a gamechanger and immensely safer to go off the grid

Which is well worth it if you find yourself needing help! Cheaper yet more valuable than car insurance.
