This is a pretty decent deal in the current market. There is a 9800X3D option but it's $300 more. I wouldn't pay that. It's not listed here but the specs elsewhere say it has an 850W Gold PSU. The RAM is DDR5-5200, which isn't the best but it is "only" $1800.

They had a better deal a few months ago, it was $1600 pre tax, and it was with a 9800x3d, this was the only two differences. But this isn't the worst, much better than the others.

Seems to me you might be imagining things because there was no such deal for $1600 a few months ago, unless by that you mean before January, which would then be pointless to even mention here. The 9800X3D Walmart deal if you're referring to, from a month ago, was $1749, certainly not $1600. Other such deals include from Microcenter, Skytech Official website, Walmart, etc., all being above $1700.
If you have the link for that deal, please share to prove me wrong.

I bought this last month, but canceled thanks to a CyberPowerPC deal. In today's market you're not likely to find anything better, at least new.

with a primary use case of gaming (mostly ARPGs e.g. Diablo 4 or Path of Exile 2 but also some story-driven FPS from time to time)

this or https://slickdeals.net/f/19810566-hp-omen-45l-gaming-desktop-pc-intel-ultra-7-265k-rtx-5070-ti-32gb-ddr5-1tb-ssd-win-11-pro-1999 ? I realize the other is 200 but I wonder if its "more future proof" that makes it worth if I have the extra 200?

For your use case these are functionally identical machines imo. Also that deal is gone, but even if it wasn't your use case is pretty low demand. I would actually say the $1500 CyberpowerPC from Woot is pretty comparable to this one but $300 less.

Sure was "imagining",

since you're sooo confident in yourself lol. I even purchased 3 of them.

I asked to share a link, not your personal purchase which clearly was YMMV. This was never posted here on slickdeals and I am sure it would have been for such a great price if it was 1) Not YMMV, and 2) Or, lasted for longer; both I reckon was not the case.
Here is the search and you can see it never being posted for $1600 in the 6-7 months: https://slickdeals.net/search?q=iBUYPOWER+Y40&searchtype=normal&filters%5Bforum%5D%5B%5D=&sort=recent&filters%5Brating%5D%5B%5D=all&filters%5Bdate%5D%5B%5D=1095&filters%5Bprice%5D%5Bmin%5D=&filters%5Bprice%5D%5Bmax%5D=&filters%5Bstore%5D%5B%5D=439
It would have been better if you had specified that in your comment. But thanks for the screenshots, nonetheless.

Purchased 3, sold 2 for 750 profit for each perhaps?
