For those curious, this configuration would have been $3199 full price retail at launch (Nov 2024).

($1999 for m4 pro base with 512gb storage, +200 for 14/20-core config, +400 for 48gb option, +200 for 1tb, +400 for 2tb storage)

The 16" 1TB M4 Max 48gb for $3300 that was recently posted is the better deal (that config was $3999 full retail at launch and is currently $3740 on Apple's Certified Refubished site, versus the config here which was $3199 at launch and would be ~$3141 on Apple refurbished site).

Yes, some of us make hundreds of thousands of dollars with our laptops, and $3000 is just a drop in the bucket for work equipment.

This MacBook Pro is a high memory, high storage workstation aimed at local AI and heavy coding, with 48GB unified memory and a 2TB SSD. The 48GB tier is described as a strong sweet spot for most local models, and the machine is said to handle local LLMs up to about 35B. At $2,999, it lands well below comparable new M5 Pro configurations and under the cheapest Apple used 48GB equivalent. The main hesitation is value, since older M4 Pro deals and some recent M5 Pro offers were lower, so the price feels less compelling than the spec sheet alone suggests.

  • Buyers comparing against newer M5 Pro configurations, because the price is materially lower than comparable new or used M5 options.

    Elon69zaychenokvoodoobunny

  • Local AI developers running 35B models, because 48GB RAM is a strong fit for most local models and the machine can handle Qwen 3.5-class workloads.

    DarkBlueSkyElon69

  • Coders who want a portable workstation for heavier projects, because the machine can handle local LLMs and is described as ideal for many coding tasks.

    DarkBlueSky

  • Shoppers chasing the absolute lowest price, because comparable M4 Pro and M5 Pro purchases have been reported at materially lower prices.

    DJFuryJuggernaut_510Dwayneethunderbird1100

  • Deal hunters comparing against newer M5 Pro configurations, because the newer chip and similar storage have been argued to be worth the small premium.

    zaychenokvoodoobunny

  • Buyers who would rather spend the same money on cloud AI access, because the price can fund frontier-model subscriptions for years.

For those interested in running local LLM on this. It can handle up to a 35 B model such as Qwen 3.5. It should be ideal for many coding tasks and can be paired with paid models for complex tasks to keep the cost optimized. Howver, you have a Capex of 3k to buy this...
That the thing that most people miss. $3k can buy you a subscription to frontier models for several years. Frontier models run circles around the best model you can fit on this already, and the gap will only widen by year 2 or 3.

M4 max is slightly slower than the new m5 max? Im leaning toward the m4max you said just wondering about the speed

Need to be 16" at this price
Over 30+ years of usage, I find the 14" class to be the right blend once 2x and higher res screens came out. W

People really buy a laptop for 3k ?! Wow..
My spec is around $5k. But its more of a tool rather than just a laptop, so I earn with it.

Summarizing comparable pricing:
New M5 version with similar specs: $3,799
New M5 version, EDU discount: $3,539
Apple used M5 version with nano-textured screen: $3,359
Apple used M5 version with 14/20 CPU and nano-textured screen: $3,269
This: $2,999

That's $800 less new-vs-new, which is not a trivial discount. At least $270 less than the cheapest Apple-used 48GB equivalent which is ... not a lot, but used vs new.

The question we all want answered: *what do you do*? Seriously, what do you do that you can justify a $5K laptop? We all want in on that.
