For those curious, this configuration would have been $3199 full price retail at launch (Nov 2024).

($1999 for m4 pro base with 512gb storage, +200 for 14/20-core config, +400 for 48gb option, +200 for 1tb, +400 for 2tb storage)

The 16" 1TB M4 Max 48gb for $3300 that was recently posted is the better deal (that config was $3999 full retail at launch and is currently $3740 on Apple's Certified Refubished site, versus the config here which was $3199 at launch and would be ~$3141 on Apple refurbished site).

Yes, some of us make hundreds of thousands of dollars with our laptops, and $3000 is just a drop in the bucket for work equipment.

Community Reviews

This MacBook Pro is a high memory, high storage workstation aimed at local AI and heavy coding, with 48GB unified memory and a 2TB SSD. The 48GB tier is described as a strong sweet spot for most local models, and the machine is said to handle local LLMs up to about 35B. At $2,999, it lands well below comparable new M5 Pro configurations and under the cheapest Apple used 48GB equivalent. The main hesitation is value, since older M4 Pro deals and some recent M5 Pro offers were lower, so the price feels less compelling than the spec sheet alone suggests.

Common Questions (4)

  • It is about $800 less than a comparable new M5 Pro configuration and roughly $270 less than the cheapest Apple-used 48GB M5 Pro equivalent. The M5 Pro is still a stronger value for some buyers at only about $230 more in certain refurbished comparisons, but this listing is meaningfully cheaper than new.

  • Yes, 48GB is a strong fit for most local AI models, and this machine can reportedly handle models up to around 35B such as Qwen 3.5. It is also described as a good coding machine, though larger frontier models may still be better for some tasks.

  • 48GB is described as the sweet spot for most local AI models, and going above that to 64GB or 128GB may not add much for that use case. The practical benefit depends on workload, but for local model running this configuration is already considered sufficient.

    Elon69DarkBlueSky

  • This exact M4 Pro 14.2-inch configuration would have been $3,199 at launch in November 2024. The listed $2,999 price is about $200 below launch MSRP.

Considering M6 is around the corner, or M7, this seems like a way for someone to get an A.I. ready laptop at some type of bargain, but I still don't understand if this is older inventory and the memory and SSD prices were already eaten with this model. M5 Pro 24 GB 1 TB was 1899 at one point, so yeah- this is not a great deal. It's ok.

Just for comparison (obv deal is now expired), 14" MBP M5 Pro w/ 48GB 1TB was $2500 relatively recently. $500 less for the newer chip but half the storage seems like it would've been the better deal

What is the price on Apple.com for this. (EDU) ?

nvm. M4 Pro, can only get refurb now I think. hard to compare the cost

M5 Pro version is around $3800 ($3600 binned chip) I guess $3000 is a deal. CPU not worth $800 more.

4-inch MacBook Pro in Space Black with M5 Pro chip
18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine

Apple Intelligence Footnote ¶
48GB unified memory
2TB SSD storage
Standard display
96W USB-C Power Adapter
U.S. English Backlit Magic Keyboard with Touch ID

A better comparison might be Apple Certified Refurbished M5 Pro 18/20 48gb 2TB SSD. I found one on the refurbished site with nano-texture display for $3,359 (so a comparable one w/o nano texture would run ~$3,230). At $230, I think the bump from M4 to M5 would be worth it.

For those interested in running local LLM on this. It can handle up to a 35 B model such as Qwen 3.5. It should be ideal for many coding tasks and can be paired with paid models for complex tasks to keep the cost optimized. Howver, you have a Capex of 3k to buy this...

Yes you're right! for $230, it's a no brainer now. I would get with the Nano display. I like it on mine.

Since you are showing 18/20 version which is a lot more cores than the M4 Pro version too I think. I think my old M4 Pro was 14/20.

Valid. Going higher RAM does not buy you much in the range of 64-128GB fof RAM. 48GB is a great spot for most of the local AI models you'd want to run.
