Biggest downside IMO is the lack of a mechanical shutter - so it could be an issue if you're shooting inside that uses LED lighting (light banding). IMO - that's why this camera is failing to sell and it's always heavily on sale. I remembered so stoked when this camera was announced and was super close to clicking that "submit pre-order" button....until I realized it had no mechanical shutter. I have 2 Lumix cameras (G7 and G9) and I don't like shooting human pictures with it - the skin tones always looks a bit weird. For reference, I have cameras from all makes: Sony, Fujifilm, Lumix/Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, and Olympus.

For the original A7C? This is better in almost every way except mechanical shutter (which only matters sometimes for photography). Way better IBIS, way better video, way more features. Compared to the A7CII, it's a bit more of a tradeoff since it has a lower megapixel count. I'd get the A7CII for photo, and this for video, and if you're not sure then pick this one because it's like half the price of an a7cii and you'll figure out what you really need later down the road.

Also, price is back up to the usual price of $1,399.99.

Thanks for the info! I didn't even notice the lack of a mechanical shutter so glad I asked. I think the a7c with a viewfinder and mech shutter make more sense for my use cases.


The LUMIX S9 sure is a handsome camera, though.
