These metal fuel cans are valued for practical storage and generator use, with a spout that fits into the can and an opening that works with a cheap transfer pump. The cans are also described as easier to store and transport than short plastic cans, and the metal build is preferred over plastic safety valves. The main concerns are thin steel, outside welds, and seams that may wobble or leak over time, especially when heat causes expansion. A few reports also mention fading or ballooning in sun, though some cans have stayed leak free for months or even years.

Common Questions (5)

  • Some units reportedly leak at the top seam or from a pinhole, and the pour spout can leak at the gasket if it does not mate flat. Others have been filled and used without leaking, especially after modifying the spring-loaded spout.

  • The can may expand and contract in hot sun if left closed, which can leave visible creases over time. The center weld seam is also not recessed, so it may not sit flush and can wobble side-to-side while putting weight on the seam.

  • It can serve as a secure generator fuel source for years, but the build is thin and some cans have failing handle welds, seam leaks, or other quality issues. It is still preferred over plastic cans with safety valves for storage and transport.

  • Some cans have not faded after months outside in strong heat, including black units, while others were said to fade quickly. Corrosion resistance was also questioned because the steel appears thinner than higher-quality military-style cans.

  • Yes. The opening can work with a cheap GF transfer pump, and the rear of the spring-loaded safety spout can be drilled out so you do not have to depress the spring when pouring.

I assume these are not as corrosion-resistant as a high quality thicker metal jerry can made with better quality steel, right? These have to be thinner low grade mild steel for this price which is fine and should work well for at least a few years, maybe even 10-20yrs or more, it just won't last as long as the ones made for Jeeps in WWII which are still rust-free today.

You could tape a couple of 12 volt hobby batteries to the rear window. Totally in keeping with the "see me" theme, and you'd have a Cyber Truck like no other. THAT would be bad ass, and might even get you a following with full cred.

If they are full of fuel with no air inside, they won't expand/contract at all since fuel doesn't drastically change volume at different temperatures like air does.
Fuel expands too and unlike air is NOT a compressible fluid so it cannot build pressure (the same extent) to accommodate the extra volume, ***that volume must go somewhere***, like the walls of the gas can. Thus my question.

https://www.ricochetfuel.com/blog...ntraction/

https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/p...emperature

Let's pretend fuel doesn't expand.....I still have the issue even with a small amount of air in the top. I could vastly overfill (to the brim) the can but that isn't a good idea either since it could lead to leaking if the seal wasn't perfect and also would almost guarantee spilled / wasted fuel when attempting my first pour. (actually leaving MORE air, since fuel isn't compressible would be the solution to this interpretation). MORE air would allow for greater expansion / contraction headroom vs a incompressible liquid which is going to require the container to accommodate the volume changes).

Not to mention, fuel cans are meant to be used. Your solution only works (again, pretending fuel does not expand) if the can is 100% full. What if I need to dispense some of the can then store the other half for later? For example for generator or tool use which likely would not require the entire 5.3 gallons at one time?

They're are a blast. I've owned 3 and also have a Honda S-MX. All JDM imported RHD vehicles. I guaranteed you will not be able to get in/out of a gas station or home improvement store without someone chatting you up.

Interesting. Mine haven't faded and they've been outside for months in well over 100* heat index.

Isn't that redundant? Why do you need extra fuel on something that can already blow itself up?
