These metal fuel cans are valued for practical storage and generator use, with a spout that fits into the can and an opening that works with a cheap transfer pump. The cans are also described as easier to store and transport than short plastic cans, and the metal build is preferred over plastic safety valves. The main concerns are thin steel, outside welds, and seams that may wobble or leak over time, especially when heat causes expansion. A few reports also mention fading or ballooning in sun, though some cans have stayed leak free for months or even years.
Common Questions (5)
Some units reportedly leak at the top seam or from a pinhole, and the pour spout can leak at the gasket if it does not mate flat. Others have been filled and used without leaking, especially after modifying the spring-loaded spout.
The can may expand and contract in hot sun if left closed, which can leave visible creases over time. The center weld seam is also not recessed, so it may not sit flush and can wobble side-to-side while putting weight on the seam.
It can serve as a secure generator fuel source for years, but the build is thin and some cans have failing handle welds, seam leaks, or other quality issues. It is still preferred over plastic cans with safety valves for storage and transport.
Some cans have not faded after months outside in strong heat, including black units, while others were said to fade quickly. Corrosion resistance was also questioned because the steel appears thinner than higher-quality military-style cans.
Yes. The opening can work with a cheap GF transfer pump, and the rear of the spring-loaded safety spout can be drilled out so you do not have to depress the spring when pouring.

Also I like the concept of these cans having the pour spout fit into the can vs the Sportmans cans which it is an independent piece that must be attached. Those always leak when pouring (at the gasket...which I've tried replacing but the connection doesn't mate flat...the gasket would need to be tapered to work).
*Props to the Sportmans cans, they did come with some robust mounts though. I had them mounted in the back of a pickup truck for extended travel trailer trips. Their green cans were really strangely painted though. Camo green but the highest gloss imaginable. You could blind the ISS with the glare
