ASUS RT-BE59 is a budget WiFi 7 router that looks strongest as a step up from older ASUS WiFi 5 gear, especially for AiMesh setups and faster 5 GHz performance. The 3x3 5 GHz radio and ASUS support history make it appealing for homes that want a newer backbone and ongoing firmware updates. The big limitation is that it has no 6 GHz band, so the WiFi 7 upside is mostly latency and snappier browsing rather than big speed gains. Its benefits also depend on having WiFi 7 capable devices, and coverage through walls still looks limited.

  • Households moving from Wi‑Fi 5 to Wi‑Fi 7, because it feels snappier and can improve 5 GHz speeds without needing a huge throughput jump.

  • People upgrading for security support, because newer firmware support matters after older routers reach end of life.

  • Homes with many Wi‑Fi 7 devices, because the newer standard is most useful when client hardware can actually use it.

  • Homes with lots of wired backhaul mesh nodes, because it can be paired with an Ethernet backbone for multi-router coverage.

  • Apartment or small-home users expecting a big speed jump from a lower-speed internet plan, because Wi‑Fi 7 mainly improves latency rather than download throughput.

  • Families with lots of older Wi‑Fi 4 to Wi‑Fi 6 devices, because they may not notice much improvement from Wi‑Fi 7.

  • People wanting stronger whole-home 5 GHz reach through walls, because the 5 GHz band can still fail to reach distant rooms.

  • Buyers who need 6 GHz coverage, because this router has no 6 GHz band.

How many devices do you have? What kind of devices do you have? I have an Asus rt ax58u and I have 18-25 devices depending on what's on at the time and I would say this is probably the limit for this router for this specific WiFi 6 router. I upgraded a couple of our laptops to intel ax200 cards to take advantage of WiFi 6 on 2.4ghz. We often do zoom conference calls at the same time on multiple devices, I'm just sharing that as an example, Wi-Fi 7 is great if you have Wi-Fi 7 capable hardware. But if you're running a lot of older devices that aren't even Wi-Fi 6 capable let alone Wi-Fi 7, you may not experience much of an improvement
I do have lots of devices, 4 secuirty cams, a number of hdtv's and echo dot's, and some smart plugs, ... but everything is fine that I can tell. I sit at main pc with mac mini m4.

If I get newer stuff, I guess I will have something to compare it with.
I might get faster frame rates on the security cams, but I do see what is happening on one firetv that shows them during the day.

I guess I will probably upgrade in week or 2, ... since I do have 2 wifi 6 routerdevices I never opened (around the place somewhere) , maybe my mac mini m4 will like the upgrade, I don't even know what wifi it uses, since I only had wifi 5 currently.

I bought macbook neo, I'm sure that will work on wifi6 (I believe). I am satisfied with my asus wifi 5, so ... hopefully I'll report back everything hopefully is snappier. If I had lag with stuff, I would jump on wifi 6 immediately, It is just me, alone in the place , and 50mb connection works ... thanks for informing me of your connections and what works for you.

I love my AC68U(from T-Mobile) as well and used it for years! Remember I got it like 20 bucks. It's really solid and reliable for years, never gives me any trouble(I have a 3600SF 2-story house and it covers all, even the big backyard, I have no need for mesh). I am running about various 40 devices at home, and I have a gig-bit internet(I am sure you mean yours 500mbps instead of 50GB). Still recently, I couldn't resist the temptation and upgrade to a BE58U(similar to this one but supports Merlin). Practically I do NOT see huge difference in network performance except feeling better. But thinking about AC68U has been 10 years, and it's time to move on and have it as a backup now.
Have you updated your T-mobile special in a while? I haven't touched it in years after it became too difficult with Merlin, and I'm getting worried some AI hack is gonna take advantage of it, even serving as just a local WiFi bridge (the antennas on this thing are amazing).

Missed this deal, bought one at Microcenter last week. I'm also "upgrading" from an old T-Mobile Asus router. I put upgrading in quotes because the only thing that's noticeably better is the 5Ghz band speeds on our second floor. But the 5Ghz band isn't reaching our living room on the first floor. It's still fast enough but was hoping for more.

I doubt you're going to find any wifi 5 routers in any store, unless it's refurbished. Cheapest I'm seeing at Best Buy is a TP Link for $80. Check Woot or eBay.
