If you can get a high quality stainless steel it might last you a lifetime. Healthwise, stainless steel will always be a better choice than any non-stick, as long as it isn't a coated stainless. I quit buying non-stick a long time ago and invested in high quality all clad one piece at a time. They clean up great and no worries about chemicals leeching into food.

get the kind that doesnt have silicone or anything on the frying pan handles so they can be thrown in the oven so they can make more dishes and not have to have extra baking pans just convenient if you dont have them already. Also invest in a cheap oil spritzer the kind you fill with oil yourself cheaper and better for you then the spray pam and the like.

Check Costco warehouse is currently selling Henckles tri-play clad stainless steel 12 piece set. I might be on clearance I recently purchase for $129.99. It might be a great choice, a high quality stainless steel set. Item #1816600

Stainless steel is great, but if you're just starting off, PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch some youtube videos on how to cook with stainless steel. If you start off wrong, you're just going to get everything stuck to the pan and be really frustrated and maybe regret spending the extra money on stainless steel. It's honestly not very hard to learn, but it's NOT something you'll likely learn all on your own without guidance by just experimenting.

The short version for most things you'd be cooking: get the pan screaming hot until water "dances" on the pan like it's on an air hockey table instead of evaporating - then dial back the heat for a minute, put in a small amount of oil (it should shimmer) and now you can cook. But watch some videos!
