Various Retailers have Altered Carbon: Takeshi Kovacs Novels Book 1 (eBook) by Richard K. Morgan for $2.99.

Thanks to Deal Hunter phoinix for finding this deal.

Available from: About this book:
  • In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.
  • Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats "existence" as something that can be bought and sold.

I thought the miniseries (season 1) was better than the book, which almost never happens. The book just doesn't flow very well and I had a hard time getting through it.

Agreed but everything after season 1 was garbage.

Agreed, I loved the first season, and the second was fine. Bought the book, was strictly worse which as you mentioned almost never happens.

Wow, you never hear the show/movie was better than the book. I LOVED the first season but didn't like the second season at all.

I read this a couple years after it was released and really liked it. As long as you go with expectations of fairly pulpy sci-fi, I think the concepts are easily interesting enough to offset the stylistic shortcomings ("Did we mention whatever he's doing is special because of his Envoy training? BECAUSE IT IS!")

Broken Angels was a big drop for me, then Woken Furies was significantly better, but in a different way than the original book. I still haven't watched the series.

I'd say it's definitely worth $3 to try if you're into moderately pulpy sci-fi and all that normally comes along with it.

Sounds a lot like Mickey7, which I enjoyed (with some asterisks).
