I have been looking for some kind of laptop docking station for a while. I was hoping for something with TB4 / USB4, HDMI 2.1, with a few usb a's and c's at 10 gbps.

But it seems that if you get one aspect you don't get some of the others. There also does not seem to be many new models out.

Names that pop up are Plugable, Anker, caldigit, Kensington then lower down Movin and ivanky.

But I generally do not see ugreen pop up for docking stations. As far as I am concerned they are just ok for plugs / phone chargers, power banks etc.

Any specific comments how they are as docking stations and which might be the better higher end models?

I've been using the Revodok Pro 9 in 1 for about a month with my MacBook M5 Pro and it's been solid. I actually got it over TB4/5 dock due to the cost difference. Make sure to run power into the PD and not rely in the host's USB-C to power it. I use it with a monitor, ethernet connection, Elgato stream deck+ with XLR dock, and an Elgato Facecam 4K without any problem.

I was looking at some of the other ones you mentioned and decided to give this a try. So far, it's been great.

I also have had good luck with the smaller Ugreen hubs (both USB-A and C) with usb/hdmi/ethernet connections on 3 or 4 other windows/Chromebook devices.

Realistically aren't these just combination of plugs / power bank tech that they do already? If you think they're ok for those then they're probably ok for a docking station / hub.

For the most part I use one of these hubs from them for a few years now and not much to complain about so far. Though I probably don't use it to it's fullest, as it's just to connect a few accessories to my laptop

The term "Docking Station" has really gotten a little stretched. That term used to mean a device into which you literally docked your laptop and it also replicated basically all the ports on your laptop and more - all without plugging anything at all into your laptop.

This is arguably a "Port Replicator" (as it is factually not a dock, and does require one plug connected to the computer), but one could also argue that it's really more like a USB Hub+.

Practically speaking, a typical cheap $10 USB-C hub on Amazon comes with multiple USB-A/C ports, one or more HDMI ports and in some cases an SD/MicroSD reader/writer and Ethernet. Many also support pass-through charging. That's basically what this is.

I don't mean to rant, but $40 for a glorified USB hub seems a bit much when compared to your typical $10 USB-C hub.

Well the one thing this can do that a USB hub can't is connect to monitors... I use one of these for my laptop workstation and it effectively does what my old dock would do.
