You 100% need to have it covered when not in use. That being said, mine usually lasts about 3 years before I need replacing
The 100 foot hose got the most use so it understandably broke first but I've had conventional hoses give me less life than 2 years.
For context this was all Illinois weather. hoses were left in buckets near the spicket year round.
