2024 model FYI
The Arc'teryx Gamma MX received a functional mid-cycle update in its 2025/2026 production compared to the 2024 version, introducing an eco-friendly PFAS-free DWR coating, a streamlined smaller hood, and tighter ergonomic cuffs, alongside brand-wide price increases.

So just under $200 is half off for a hoodie?

Great all around multi-season jacket. The fleece lining can be a little grippy, but this is one of my favorite coats for Fall to Spring hiking. Very durable outer shell. Arc is a little overpriced for sure so it might not play super well here on SD, but this is a good price for this coat.

Or this, with the same 4 pockets, same lined jacket, waterproof shell, fitted cuffs and drawstring waist...for $70 and a name brand https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...u=25765064

This jacket is much higher quality than any Columbia jacket under $100. a lot of Columbia jackets are garbage. yeah this is an expensive and now a mainstream (pick me) city walking jacket brand, but comparing the two is silly.

99% of these jackets sold, if not 100% will be worn by people who don't need this "quality" of jacket. If you're stationed at mcmurdo, sure, you need a $400 jacket that performs like this, for the rest of "normal" people, the difference in quality between a Columbia and an Arc'teryx is completely useless. I would argue defending a $400 jacket is silly. This is a status symbol for our monkey brains, another shiny rock that is shinier than the other monkey's rock. How much of life is controlled (ruined) by low self esteem...

i don't see any functional difference between a 3000 dollar LV Neverfull and a 200 dollar handbag either.

but sometime people pay for brands.

I own two Arcteryx jackets, but $400 MSRP for a soft shell seems pretty bonkers. Sale price is more palatable.

This is a primo ice climbing/alpine jacket. Stick to your Carhartt hoodie if you're looking for something to keep your warm as you walk across the parking lot from your f150 to the feed and supply store

Columbia products are not even in the same category as Arc'teryx gear. Don't get me wrong, Columbia isn't that bad but its no where near as good as Arc'teryx. Much higher end brand.

tl;dr

Arc`teryx is a highly respected brand.
If you can afford it and you like it - buy it. It costs less than when I bought mine.

This jacket is only appropriate for wear while luring strangers into a white panel van.

My jacket from 2005 is still going strong and it's been to places. By all accounts Arc'teryx should be out of business because how good their stuff is. I don't know how they can still sell new stuff when virtually everything is indestructible.
