One could argue that it was bound to happen (Murphy's Law) and that anyone else could have caused serious damage.
This book is documented events of social engineering in a timeline when computer security was non-existent. Kevin's ability to break into old dial up systems by phreaking telecommunication systems is the exact reason we CAN prosecute criminals. He is the reason there is a access prohibited message on every router because there was no legal prescience to penalize cyber criminals so you're welcome.
This book is in fact a great read keep in mind it was published in 2011 but tells stories from 1992, but being constantly chased by the FBI, posing as a detective using fake credentials at the State Registrar for Vital Statistics then walking away with 50 state sealed BLANK birth certificates. Eventually getting caught, thrown into prison only for the US Marshall to tell you you got booted out and moved because we didnt have legal structure to properly prosecute.
I doubt you read this book because his adventures were quite fascinating. As far as a criminal, well he was not selling a ponzi scheme like Bernie Madhoff or stealing money from people like Enron or dumping hazardous microplastics in our ponds and lakes like Dupont. So if you think he ruined computers for you, I have an ice bridge to sell you.
For anyone else, its $2, its a good read.

The book isn't even a good read and would feel completely irrelevant if you know anything about security. The only redeeming quality might be nostalgia for the olden days.
Kevin Mitnick may have had his faults, but he ultimately didn't amount to a piece of s**t. He turned it around and was gone too soon. He deserves your basic human respect for that.

I'm just glad my employer switched security training providers so I'm no longer subjected to videos of the ghost of Kevin Mitnick poorly explaining how hacks work.
