Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X or S is shaping up as a huge digital release, with the box containing a download code instead of a disc. The comments point to a massive install size and day one patches as the reason, and the move is seen as a way to limit resale and keep pricing control over time. That also means there is no physical copy to keep or trade in, which makes the preorder feel less appealing for anyone who wants ownership in hand. A digital only launch with strong launch demand, but not much collector value.

  • The deal includes a download-code-in-a-box format, which avoids needing a PS5 or Xbox disc drive for play.

  • The large install size and day-one patch expectations make a download-code release format feel more practical than discs.

  • Best Buy Plus members may still benefit from the membership rewards structure tied to the purchase.

  • Target has offered 20% off pre-orders for military and for college students or teachers, which can beat the Best Buy Plus offer if you qualify.

  • The lack of a physical disc option can reduce the sense of ownership compared with waiting for a disc release.

  • The download-code approach can eliminate the secondary resale market, which may keep digital pricing higher over time.

  • Some buyers may choose not to support the title because it lacks a physical option for games.

  • Best Buy Plus may not provide as strong a discount as other retailers have offered for GTA VI pre-orders.

As much as I know everyone loves GTA you shouldn't support this game to send message to these companies we still want physical option for games, without that option it's bad for everyone even digital only consumers. It will be easy for me to not support this game I don't play GTA at all never have.

Games can and have shipped on multiple discs before in the past (Final Fantasy games), but also including the more recent PS5 games (Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, FFVI Rebirth) which have a 'Data' disc and a 'Play' disc. Same thing for Rockstar's other game, RDR2 which came with a Data disc and a Play disc.

This is more for them to prevent reselling the disc, and maintaining higher margins throughout the game's lifetime. GTA5 can be found really cheap nowadays since it's an old 13-year game, but 13 years after GTA6, you will not find GTA6 so cheaply since there is no physical version available to drive the digital price down. They eliminate the secondary market which brings them no profits, and hold control over the pricing since it's a digital only game with no other competitors.

That's what makes sense.
Pretty much took the words right out of me. Well said.

I'm not saying I've just been waiting solely on GTA6 but it was definitely a release I was anticipating and would have bought Day 1 if not for Sony's decision to kill physical games. I'd have still bought it Day 1 with the code in box if Sony hadn't pulled this stunt. Needless to say, I'm not buying anything digital from Playstation nor am I supporting this code in a box nonsense. I'm buying physical only and when that ceases to exist, I'll make the jump to PC. I think Sony is banking on users not being willing to give up their digital library but I've never bought digital titles outside of those that are cheap as can be on the store and the PS+ games each month...it isn't going to hurt me to give up my digital collection and I'll be glad to do it when the time comes. The alternative is paying 1k plus for a PS6, being locked into the PS Store, and paying for online play (which likely ends up costing more than it currently does)...no thanks. I'll bite the bullet and pay more for a PC.

Wait till next year for a physical disc version. Thats when you feel like you actually own the game than just a receipt. Not worth pre-ordering now.

And it will be the best and most intense way to experience this on launch day. Excuse me while I go hug my PS5 pro and my preorder of GTA.

Are you meaning the Kinect as a whole or requiring the Kinect to be sold with the Xbox one? Assuming the latter, I actually wasn't opposed to that. The Kinect was cool as hell. I remember using the free trial of the P90X app and it could detect that I was not clinching my abs... which was pretty crazy. The games played pretty well too. The thing is it was a catch 22, developers weren't utilize it or make games for it if it wasn't widely adopted and it wasn't gonna be widely adopted if they didn't make games for it. Having it bundled at a discount while offering a Kinect-less option was probably for the best, as some people just didn't want the Kinect.I'm not sure if you saw the Nex Playground but it's basically a budget Kinect but it came with a bunch of games and my kids were having a blast with it. If a game like that came with the bundled Kinect and they demoed that in stores it would have done so much better. With all that, yes, a lot of people were still loyal to Xbox but were looking over the fence at PlayStation and after that announcement where they oozed greed and said you need to give them more money if you wanna let your friend borrow your game and you can't play without internet that destroyed that loyalty and the PS4 sold far better and it was over at that point.
Nex Playground is an overpriced gimmick (I say that as someone returning one)

Same! ONLY I'm keeping my ps5 too, so I'll still have what I already bought. I refuse to give Sony any more money though. I'm not a pvp player, so don't need plus.

Physical copies are annoying as hell. Give me digital...the only reason I buy physical is because it's more common to see discounts.
