Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X or S is shaping up as a huge digital release, with the box containing a download code instead of a disc. The comments point to a massive install size and day one patches as the reason, and the move is seen as a way to limit resale and keep pricing control over time. That also means there is no physical copy to keep or trade in, which makes the preorder feel less appealing for anyone who wants ownership in hand. A digital only launch with strong launch demand, but not much collector value.
The deal includes a download-code-in-a-box format, which avoids needing a PS5 or Xbox disc drive for play.
The large install size and day-one patch expectations make a download-code release format feel more practical than discs.
Best Buy Plus members may still benefit from the membership rewards structure tied to the purchase.
Target has offered 20% off pre-orders for military and for college students or teachers, which can beat the Best Buy Plus offer if you qualify.
The lack of a physical disc option can reduce the sense of ownership compared with waiting for a disc release.
The download-code approach can eliminate the secondary resale market, which may keep digital pricing higher over time.
Some buyers may choose not to support the title because it lacks a physical option for games.
Best Buy Plus may not provide as strong a discount as other retailers have offered for GTA VI pre-orders.

This is more for them to prevent reselling the disc, and maintaining higher margins throughout the game's lifetime. GTA5 can be found really cheap nowadays since it's an old 13-year game, but 13 years after GTA6, you will not find GTA6 so cheaply since there is no physical version available to drive the digital price down. They eliminate the secondary market which brings them no profits, and hold control over the pricing since it's a digital only game with no other competitors.
That's what makes sense.
