Using cell phone satellite text sucks. These are way more reliable, you can send a link to friends/family and they can track your location, SOS button allows for Search and Recue to find you.

The Garmin InReach Messenger deal that was posted recently may be better for casual hikers/users.

Fyi, the free SOS satellite messaging service offered by many carriers and etc do have limitations and do not work in some area. For example, the T-Satellite service offered by TMO do not work in Baja California...

how often have you used the phone satellite with phone? on my last trip there was a pretty long delay to lock in satellite, its not constant so a few minutes later I would need to lock satellite again. sending messages would fail. I have a iPhone 17.

with my in reach the messages went thru right away, no satellite lock. I can type the messages on my phone and send via in reach. for sure its not for everyone, and in my case it wasn't an emergency to send out the messages but my wife was a little worried because it had been 2 days in a row where I couldn't send an end of day message. for me the extra $7 a month (for 6 months a year, then I suspend it) is not much to pay for that extra insurance, peace of mind.

These are designed for backcountry exploring and backpacking. Places cell phones don't work or are too limited. For those cases, it's a great device for emergencies and peace of mind.

Do keep in mind besides the device cost, to access most of the satellite features you'd need a $40 activation fee and $8-50 per month subscription.

Do you really wanna risk just relying solely on your delicate cell phone when hiking or camping out in the wilderness? Even though this can easily be carried in your backpack? Better to be overprepared than underprepared if you're gonna be out there. Don't underestimate mother nature.

Had to look at the reviews to get any idea of subscription costs. Really should be at least mentioned in the description.

For these plans can I sign up for the months I will be using it and cancel on the months I will not be or it is like a contract you are locked in for the year?

Cellphone-to-satellite service, such as T-Mobile's T-Satellite, is mainly an emergency backup for texting, location sharing, and very limited use of specially optimized apps when no cellular tower is available. We have been out in the middle of nowhere -- 50 miles to the nearest cell tower - have connected to the satellite via t-mobile iphone 17 .... and literaaly sent a 10 word sentence that timed out about 10X and took 30 minutes to finally go thru...even with a clear view of the sky.

A dedicated satellite terminal is designed to provide a stronger, more dependable connection for sustained voice communications, email, file transfers, operational data, and multiple users, rather than simply giving one person a basic lifeline from a cellphone.
