Looking at this compared to the newer model:

It seems the newer model has USB 3.1 via USB-C, larger power supply, and a better fan... This price is great, but those seem like important upgrades, especially since the older model has cooling issues per reviews.

It's always going to have cooling issues. It's a design flaw. That's why most enclosures mount the drives horizontally.

As far as USB 3.1, it doesn't really make any difference in the real world. I run four 4-bay enclosures (Probox) similar to this with just the 3.0 output to my media server and there is no problem streaming 4k content to my clients.

And the Proboxe's don't overheat, and the variable speed fan never goes past speed level 1.
