This telescoping magnetic pickup tool is aimed at grabbing metal parts from tight spots, like engine bays, drains, and other hard to reach places. The stronger 25 pound rating and 30 inch reach make it appealing for fishing out screws, bearings, rust chunks, and tiny metal bits, and the long service life stands out in use. The main hesitation is the rating itself, since the rod and magnet strength are questioned, especially at angles or near other metal. A practical little helper if you need reach more than brute force.

  • Mechanics fishing dropped bolts from tight engine bays, because the long telescoping shaft reaches into hard-to-access spots and can retrieve small metal parts.

  • DIYers cleaning metal debris from drains or fluid pans, because the magnet can pull out tiny bits of metal from hard-to-see places.

  • People who need a magnet that stays usable over years, because one unit still worked like new after eight years and another lasted decades before the magnet failed.

  • Shop workers handling loose fasteners, because the magnet can pick up small items and then release them when turned off.

  • Buyers expecting the strongest pull in this price range, because the claimed strength may feel weaker than advertised.

  • People who need the full 25-pound rating at an angle, because the telescoping rod may not hold that load reliably.

  • Car repairers who only need light pickup force, because lighter-duty magnetic tools can be more useful for everyday work.

  • Shoppers wanting a prebuilt electromagnet pickup tool, because this is a permanent-magnet design rather than a powered switchable magnet.

I've seen items like this at local car shops: Auto Zone/O'Reilly's Auto parts. If you need one ASAP, look there. I also heavily doubt the 25 lbs rating.

So I'm curious how you would use the electromagnet to make it worth the added complexity?
it's used to fetch metal things that are in hard to reach places like using it to remove the small metal ball bearings in the hub of a bicycle wheel.

i've dropped a screw in the engine bay of my car without it falling all the way to the ground. This tool would have been really useful to fish the screw out of the engine bay.

i think most people would -not- need such a tool, but for a handful of use cases it's pretty useful.

I have this one and it's way better than that HF one that breaks easily from the extension rod.
I have had mine for 8 yrs. works just as good the day I bought it.

Why the interest in an electromagnetic pick-up tool? I could see the usefulness in a metal shop if you want to be able to turn it off, so you can use it when you want to pick up something, but don't want it collecting metal shavings all day long while you work. Other than that, I like the idea of a permanent magnet that doesn't rely on electronics and batteries. So I'm curious how you would use the electromagnet to make it worth the added complexity?
I'm guessing because the stronger magnets find their way onto anything but what you're trying to pick up. They get stuck on the brace next to the bolt...

For working on my car the lighter duty ones are actually more useful. Harbor freight has a ~1lb one for $4.

I've had the exact tool but with "Craftsman" on the label for at least 25 years.
The magnet broke off and has been missing for 24.
Too bad because it was good before it broke.
I may give this another try.
