Been running great on third party toner and drums, and we print about a 500 sheet pack a month.
Disable Firmware Updates on the device and in the software so they don't surprise you and block 3rd party supplies some day.

Very helpful. Thank you.
My philosophy on refurbished products is if the manufacturer is willing to give the full warranty then I will buy it, if they only give a 90 day warranty then to me they are saying they can't guarantee their product will even last.
As to the fact that you got it for $90 last year, but how much do we have to pay for the time machine that will get us back to last year. If someone needs a printer now, telling them it was less money last year is absolutely worthless. You know how much cheaper my car was last year than if I bought it now?
As to the third point about aftermarket toners, there is absolutely no comparison between the quality of printing from the aftermarkets versus the genuine Brother ones. So it all depends what someone will be using the printer for - if you are generally using it for printing stuff at home then the aftermarket ones should suffice. If you are using it for a business or to print a resume or to hand in a paper at school or anything else where you want to look professional, then you want to buy the genuine toner.
And lastly, all it takes is one bad/defective aftermarket toner to leak and to ruin your printer/clothing/floor and have all your savings and more wiped out in one shot.

That's great, I did not know that about Brother
