If you get it play it now before Sony flips the DRM switch and it's dead.

I just got the 3DS version "Metal Gar Solid: Snake Eater 3d". I know this is a remaster is mostly graphics with some better controls, but wondering if this is worth buying and just not playing the 3DS version. 3D effects are probably pretty cool...

When Snake Eater hit the 3DS, it was such a feat AT THE TIME. So cool to see one of my favorite games from the PS2 era playable in a handheld format...but remember, this was in like 2011. Concessions had to be made to get it on the 3DS, including a hardcoded 20fps cap on the entire engine. Playing on an original 3DS or 3DSXL will have frequent stutters during heavier gameplay areas. Playing on a New 3DS or New 3DSXL will help a lot but doesn't change the fact that the game just has a 20fps MAX framerate on the 3DS.

So it's really cool to play the game on the 3DS for the sheer appreciation of what it took to get it on the handheld at the time and also for the cool factor...but, in my opinion, it's just not a great experience given the low framerate and performance issues.

MGS Delta is an incredibly faithful remake. It's basically a 1:1 in terms of overall feel (including all the stuff that makes the game so great and the stuff that makes it clunky in 2026 like the menu system). Some quality of life upgrades are there like a quick camo and food system but they're pretty scarce.

I feel like Delta is a great price at $25 and, personally, I'd play this over the 3DS port.

that dude's tripping or on meth. Disc will work for life on the PS5 with a disc drive. My mini PS1, PS2 fatty, PS3 slim, PS4 (OG) still play disc copies to this day.

How can this be a physical disk? Sony says we don't buy these 😉.

The landscape is changing though. Some games, even though they're physical, still require servers to function and those servers can be taken offline, making your physical disc a coaster.
Some games only come with part of the content on the disc, requiring the rest of the game files to be downloaded. If those servers are gone or the game files are pulled, your disc-based game won't work.

Sony could, theoretically, revoke licenses (even for physical discs), put out a firmware update that disables the disc drive, etc. It's not out of the realm of possibility. It's incredibly unlikely but at least part of it could happen.

This ONLY applies to games where you need an internet connection to play. I.E. Multi-player or a game that requires a PS Plus subscription to play. Any single player games that can be played offline are fine. Look at the old Deadpool game that was delisted by Sony. I can and still play that game to this day with zero problems.

True, as long as the game doesn't require an additional download. If the ENTIRE game is on the disc, then sure, you should be able to play for the life of the console. However, if only a portion of the game's files are on the disc (for space reasons, etc), and that game gets pulled for whatever reasons, then you're out of luck. With games inflating way past the 100GB mark, this scenario of additional downloads being necessary is becoming far more common.

PS5 Blu-ray discs either have a 66GB capacity (dual-layer) and 100GB capacity (triple-layer).

Games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (147GB), NBA 2k23 (143GB), Star Wars: Jedi Survivor (148GB), Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War (215GB), and so on all require you to download additional files when installing off the disc. So, theoretically, a growing number of games could become non-playable despite having the disc.

Yes, this is an unlikely scenario but it's not a non-zero one either.

This game is awesome and definitely worth it if you're a fan of the original. It's a great remake.
