The box was gigantic, heavy, and looked like it had been dropped onto the interstate from a moving vehicle. I was seriously not pleased with the box condition. But after I snapped some pics I opened it up, and it was perfect inside.
The sub on this thing is big. Bigger than my Polk PSW10 subwoofer it replaced. But more powerful? Well..... more on that in a minute.
The soundbar is huge. It is the entire length of my Sony 65" TV with the surrounds attached (I charged them so I could do calibration and testing). The surrounds add about 6 inches of length to each side when attached.
I fiddled with my TV inputs for a while and was having Roku volume issues until I realized the sound bar HAS it's own hdmi inputs. So instead of relying on the HDMI ARC circlejerk, I plugged my Roku into the sound bar, then the sound bar connects to TV ARC port. Then I could get Roku to pair for volume control with HDMI-CEC. There's also an optical port if you need to go that route. I also had to fiddle with my TV display setup to enable HDR and HDMI enhance mode, etc etc (when I was passing through my Denon AVR HDR wouldn't work right, now it does going to the soundbar first).
So how does it sound? Is it better than my Polk bookshelf speakers + PSW10 + 10 yr old Denon AVR?
For music.... mixed bag. Fired up Pandora and it sounds good, but not better than what I had. Music was never really a problem before, I had always thought music sounded good and the PSW10 puts out nice bass without sounding too boomy or hollow. The JBL sub didn't sound as good here, a bit boomy and hollow. But it did get loud.
Now I turned to TV and just picked a show at random off Hulu Live TV. I immediately noticed a difference, the dialog was very much enhanced and easy to hear. Fired up F1 from the Fruit + app, and.... WOW. With Atmos and the sub set to highest settings, and putting the little wireless surround speakers right behind the couch. WOW. Dialog was tight, even during otherwise very noisy scenes. Sound effects seemed to bounce around the room. I like it. My old Denon could get loud, but dialog gets lost amongst the loud noises... and to hear people talking you have to turn it way up, then something explodes on screen and pictures fly off the wall and the wife comes flying into the room screaming at me to turn the volume down.
We are moving and in my new place I want to be done with all the chunky TV stands, speaker stands, speakers, wires, etc etc. I want to hang my TV (or even better, a new OLED wink wink) on the wall, mount the soundbar underneath it, and have minimal wires. The 1300x MK2 can do that, and sound better on TV & movies doing it. Music is acceptable, but music isn't my primary goal for my TV.
The one thing I haven't quite figured out is the PS5. But I'll deal with that later, it doesn't have to be right next to my TV, I have a really long HDMI cable I could use and hide the PS5 somewhere. Not a problem for today, but I do look forward to trying some games with this thing.
So, worth a grand? Yeah, I think so. I have a $300 Polk soundbar + sub on the bedroom TV. It is MEH. I have heard my friend's $1000+ Sonos bar. This is better.
Now I just need to unload my old Polk speakers and receiver to a younger person who likes stuff loud.
