The TI-84 Evo is a school-focused graphing calculator that keeps the familiar TI-84 layout while adding USB-C charging and a few useful math upgrades. The interface stays consistent with older TI calculators, which helps in classrooms, and the degree and radian handling, fraction display, and easy decimal toggle are practical touches. It also preserves the tactile keypad that beats typing on a phone or tablet. The main drawbacks are a slow interface, weak battery life, slow charging, and a display and print format that feel dated. A solid fit when school compatibility matters more than modern polish.

Common Questions (4)

  • Probably not. It is described as mainly justified for testing and school use, while the price is considered high for what it adds compared with a phone or older calculators.

  • No. The TI-84 Evo is reported to have much worse battery life than the 84+ CE Python, and it also charges very slowly. It can be a downgrade if long battery life matters.

  • The biggest upgrade is USB-C charging, so no special cable is needed. It also can convert degree inputs while staying in radians mode, and it shows rational answers as fractions with an easy toggle to decimals.

  • Yes, TI-84 calculators can run games and custom programs, including older setups like MirageOS and user-written equation-solving programs. That kind of use is possible on the platform, though exam settings may require clearing memory first.

amazing how ti graphing calculators have remained similar price point after 25-30 years
As time went on the functions of the calculators became more and more basic compared to what chips can handle nowadays. Don't need an advanced chip and the calculators are probably nearing towards extinction.

Corruption is what causes classes to require every student to buy a thing instead of the classroom having the thing that every class requires. Books, calculators, lab equipment... it's all corrupt.

There's no reason to get this dinosaur now that games can be loaded onto the phone in your pocket. Back in the day you had to get an expensive calculator if you wanted to look like you were doing math while playing Tetris.

Years ago schools in certain states would make it mandatory to buy a ti-83 calculator since math teachers were trained how to use it. Then the teachers could teach the students how to use them for state exams essentially. I do wonder if they still have these requirements. Ai can solve math equations with ease.
Its still the case. My high schooler's teacher recommended him to replace his casio calculator with this one

As a math teacher for the past 14 years, I prefer not getting into newer calculators unless it really adds to the abilities or makes things a lot easier
thats what TI is also hoping.

I remember downloading and installing MirageOS on my TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculator back in high school. I had so many games. Block Dude was the best.

I also used to code my own programs on the calculator to solve equations for me.

Some students stored test answers in the "programs" section of the calculator and used to get caught unless the memory was cleared prior to the exams.

Phoenix was my favorite. Pretty sure ticalc.org still exists with all of the games/apps available.

The fact that these are still this expensive is insane.
can't they play things like doom and do a lot more than they used to? I can't recall which one i bought recently for my kid but it supports python and stuff I wished my old one could have done.

I like the visual appeal, but knowing that it is inferior, I still want it. I just have a calculator jones.

I used to use a slide rule also, would have loved to have something like this but they were too expensive or nonexsistant way back then.
