Squier is Fender's less expensive line. Sonic and Affinity are more beginner-level, and Classic Vibe is a step up and generally good for the money. Epiphone is basically the same idea on the Gibson side, with cheaper beginner models and nicer versions as you go up the range.
Yamaha Pacificas are also really solid first guitars and usually have good quality control. Ibanez, Jackson, Schecter, and Sterling by Music Man all have good options in the lower price ranges too. Honestly, for a kid, I'd put some weight on whichever guitar they think looks cool and makes them want to pick it up and play it.
I'd definitely check FB Marketplace too. There are tons of beginner/intermediate guitars on there, and $200–$300 used can sometimes buy a lot more guitar than the same money new. Fakes are something to be aware of, but they're generally less of an issue with lower-priced guitars since there's not as much incentive to fake them.
So I wouldn't talk anyone out of that Player II for $550, it's a good guitar at that price. But if thats stretching the budget, there are plenty of good first guitars in the $150–$400 range, especially used. You can use the saved coin for a decent modeling amp, cable, tuner, etc.
$550 for a Player II is actually a pretty decent deal, and it's definitely a guitar they wouldn't need to replace as they get better. That said, if you're just trying to get a kid started, you can spend quite a bit less and still get a good guitar.
