This is an interesting setup. The 16MP sensor is old. Panasonic upgraded to a 20MP in most cameras 6 or 7 years ago I think. Then again, in-body stabilization is rad, and the kit lens would be really versatile. Seems like a decent deal if you are okay with the resolution.

It's also strange that it's limited to 30fps for video, limiting usefulness as a vlogging camera

While I do have this camera, I'm here to warn you that it's a 9 year old camera, and smartphone cameras have come very close in that time.

It's not a bad deal, but I would prefer a used G9 with whatever lens you want.

In 2026, I'd get a G9 or G97 or G9 Mark II. G85 is from 2016. Likely these are being phased out.

I've had this camera for years. It's honestly been a great camera. It's two limitations are the autofocus hunting and 4k30fps instead of 40k60fps. If you use manual focus and don't need 4k60 (it does 1080p60) then this is a good deal.

Yeah, I have the camera as well. It's strength is the 4k image quality. I don't like the 1080p much. Significant drop in quality.

The low light performance of the 16MP sensor is just not good by today's standards--You're getting pretty grainy at ISO 6400. At this price point and given the form factor of the G85, I would say you're better off looking for a used G9 to get the better sensor and controls.

Save your money and just opt for the G9 II.

Even with a micro 4/3 sensor this will take photos that are miles better than any smartphone even in low light

I'm not disagreeing with you on that niche case.

But out of the box, for a lot of people's uses like normal people/landscape photography, and posted straight to instagram (which compresses it), smartphone cameras are incredibly close these days.

Yeah, I'd recommend this more for a hybrid camera than a strictly photo camera. The video quality can be really really good if you get the settings right.
