The 4-bay version d4-320 is on sale for $150 now. $90 more just for two more bays?

There's no raid mode with this thing. You better pray none of the disks fail...

Does anybody use hardware raid anymore anyway though? Just set up your raid in software.

I assume it's labeled diskless so potential buyers understand there are no hard drives included. Not sure how this is "crazy marketing talk"

Yup and I honestly don't think that's a problem at all. Meaning the people that truly need it, will spend and those of us that don't, will no longer contribute as much to e-waste harmingnout environment.

It's just too bad, the reason for this is harming our environment. At least, I believe it will eventually resolve itself with increased efficiency and improved technology.

But for personal use, do we really need 6-HDD running simultaneously 24/7 wasting electricity and wearing those drives down?

I argue the vast majority don't and very few do.

I'm open to be wrong, so share your opinions.

If anything it's not marketing and actually reflects what it is!

This should be praised!

Out of curiosity, why over alternatives?

Yeah nah, my Plex server, docker containers, and personal cloud all work great in a redneck setup of this that runs 24/7.

Subscription services can suck my hardware spheres, I'm not paying hundreds of dollars a month so some big corporation can hoard my data and bleed me dry when I can do it how I want to from my own home exactly how I want it, with 100x less bloat and ads as well.

as far as the enclosure goes. its built well, its quiet, and ive never had disconnects or issues

for stablebit it lets you use drives of any size. mix and match whatever and dont loose any space. options like unraid arent cheap from what i remember and you have to designate a large parity drive. truenas if i remember correctly doesnt let you use all the space if your drives are different sizes (again from memory). stablebit doesnt care about sizes, doesnt have wasted space, doesnt need a specific parity drive.

ive tried doing simmillar with linux with mergerfs and snapraid, but its wasnt a set it up and forget it experience for me. i had issues that i had to trouble shoot on a too regular basis

hope that helps

It is worth it over time. I have two of these units and they were good investments a few years back now. I'm glad I got the 6 bay versions at the time. Just less to deal with and with the prices of HDDs you can add a few smaller ones without completely breaking the bank to tide us over until sanity comes back to prices.
