For this specific type of printer, it can work in thermal transfer mode(with a ribbon + labels) or direct mode(thermal labels).

Other than that, it comes down to the speed and durability, it can usually print 1 label per second and the printer head is supposed to last for years.

Software wise, these are usually supported by some advanced management software where it prints labels using a template to ensure each label comes with different addresses and tracking numbers. Usually couriers allow you to print directly from an business account when buying labels in batch(postpaid).

Not meant for personal use, obviously.
