This TCL 55 inch S Series Roku TV is mainly valued as a fast, budget smart TV that can run well enough without a separate streaming box. The Roku interface is still seen as quick on low cost sets, and the 43 inch version is loved in a bedroom setup. The main concerns are software and reliability, including reports of aggressive ads, broken live TV pause, update related glitches, random shutdowns, and screens going blank or gray while the remote still responds. It looks like a convenient starter TV, but one that may be better kept off the internet if long term stability matters.

  • Bedroom viewers wanting a simple budget smart TV, because Roku runs quickly enough that a separate streaming device may not be needed.

  • People using a TV as a basic monitor for external streaming boxes, because the built-in smart features can be bypassed when they become unreliable.

  • Tinkerers comfortable with external devices, because a laptop or streaming box can replace the built-in apps when browser playback is limited.

  • Cord-cutters relying on over-the-air channels, because OTA can still work without internet after a short grey-screen delay.

  • Viewers who want dependable built-in streaming apps, because the TV can randomly shut off, mute itself, switch inputs, or reboot into a blank screen.

  • Shoppers expecting long-term software stability, because automatic updates can brick the TV or leave it stuck in a failure state.

  • Households depending on OTA channels without internet, because updates can break live TV pause and make antenna channels stop working offline.

  • People who want full-resolution browser streaming, because some providers can be limited to 720p in a TV browser.

I dont use the streaming on the TVs like others stated they are crap. I use a Nvidia Shield and have for quite awhile and love it.

I had. TCL with Roku TV built in get bricked from an automatic update. Roku not TCL would take responsibility. Pointing at the other company to fix. My workaround is to plug a Roku stick into the hdmi and basically use the tv as a monitor.

Pretty sad and disappointing that the tv broke from a software issue that is completely fixable but they wouldn't help. I tried to update the firmware via a usb but wasn't able to.

Just note, Roku released several updates recently that have increased ads, added sound to ads, reduced customization of home, broken live tv pause, decreased reception of ota channels, and made it so OTA channels don't work without internet. I've loved the roku platform- till this month. Now its a monitor, not a tv.
Yup. Roku got bought out by PI. Enshitifcation.

I just had my 2023 55" TCL S series TV "die" on me. The TV would appear to turn on and respond to remote inputs with sound effects, except nothing would be on the screen. Apparently this is a fairly common issue with these TVs, and seems suspiciously correlated to when system updates are installed

I'm very tempted to do as others have suggested and keep my next TV off the internet, and just use a much more easily replaceable streaming box instead of the native "smart TV" features
I had my hisense do this recently and I wound up taking it apart and getting replacement LED back lights. Definitely didn't go back together like it was, but definitely was cheaper than getting a new tv.

Roku has been a publicly traded company since 2017. (Though Fox is planning to buy it.)

The capacitors on these also go out very frequently.

Luckily, they're the easiest component to replace, especially since you can spot when they're bad (they bulge).

A whole pack of replacements for your next 5+ TVs can be had for under $10.

You don't even have to be good at soldering — just good at following YouTube videos.

I've brought one of our Hisense TVs back to life twice in 6 years just by replacing the caps.

I'm still using the launch day shield from 2015. 4K at 60hz was indeed future proof (for the most part) Smart tv apps always suck. Dedicated device forever.

Agree with Bozanimal. Find any older laptop or desktop PC that can output in 4K 60Hz over HDMI and connect that to the TV. Put Linux Mint on there or install Windows 10 and don't activate it, you'll never notice it's unactivated anyway. Go into the Mint app store and install Brave browser or within Windows visit Brave.com website to download Brave. Brave blocks ads on most streaming platforms and also those pesky YouTube ads Wink Get the Logitech K series wireless keyboard with touchpad to use as a remote. You can now enjoy literally anything on the internet with advertisements mostly blocked and YOU can control the privacy settings. It's wild that these new TVs have microphones built into the remote or the TV set. NO WAY I'm putting up with audio spying within my living room.
Yeah... let's encourage the average person who's not tech savvy down the path of the Linux community and everyone becomes the 4th contestant on the Linus tech tips does Linux challenge and gets bamboozled by all the annoying garbage that comes from trying to run Linux. Ugh. And that includes mint.

A monitor- with ads! Roku's still the best budget Smart TV OS platform, unfortunately. You only have a handful of other options:

🤢Google TV - The worst: Monitors and reports everything you watch back to their motherships and corroborates everything between your phone, computer, and other logins across accounts. Google will even use your data to figure out who else is in your family and conveniently "add" them as login options.
🤢Apple tvOS - Like Google but without ACR. Apple uses a hard-walled privacy model to purposely lock out other data brokers so they can keep your sweet, sweet data for themselves. They want to be your data dom.
🤢Tizen (Samsung) - Similar to Google; Samsung tracks every pixel crossing the screen through your HDMI cords (video games, cable boxes, etc.) using ACR, but the OS is super fast. That said, the TVs themselves are more expensive.
🤢LG - The worst: Stalks you and mercilessly pounds you with ads whether you like it or not. Company recently censured by Microsoft after installing adware from its monitors onto PCs without disclosure or consent of the owner (you can't make this stuff up). Remember, LG is NOT "Life's Good," it's "Lucky Goldstar," which comes from two separate Korean companies that merged, Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp. and GoldStar Co. You know: Those super ethical industrial chemical companies. I'm sure they're not doing anything suspicious with your data.

Or you can be an absolute nut like me and turn off all Smart functionality and connect your PC to your television, making it a monitor, and layering additional complexity into your life in a futile attempt to fight the tide of omnipresent monitoring. Even then, my Samsung QN90D will still ask me to log in with my Google account almost daily, despite having disabled every internet function I could find.

Ironically this just happened to me today on one of mine. Turns on and you can hear the sound effects from the remote but screen is kind of grayed out. I have several TCLs with Roku and this one is left outside on my patio so I just assumed the humidity got it but after reading some of these comments I am questioning that.
Same here.
