This TCL 55 inch S Series Roku TV is mainly valued as a fast, budget smart TV that can run well enough without a separate streaming box. The Roku interface is still seen as quick on low cost sets, and the 43 inch version is loved in a bedroom setup. The main concerns are software and reliability, including reports of aggressive ads, broken live TV pause, update related glitches, random shutdowns, and screens going blank or gray while the remote still responds. It looks like a convenient starter TV, but one that may be better kept off the internet if long term stability matters.

  • Roku TV can run quickly enough that a separate streaming device may be unnecessary for some setups.

  • Using an external PC or laptop with HDMI can help avoid Roku smart features while enabling ad blocking via Brave.

  • OTA channels can still work without internet, though a short grey-screen delay may occur before playback.

  • Some owners prefer using an external streaming box like a Nvidia Shield instead of the TV's built-in apps.

  • Backlight or LED failures can take the whole display out, and repair may require replacing LED backlights or capacitors.

  • The TV can reportedly fail with a blank or grayed-out screen while remote sound effects still work.

  • Recent Roku updates can increase ads, add sound to ads, and reduce home customization options.

  • Roku TV system updates can reportedly brick the TV, leaving it unusable until workarounds like an HDMI Roku stick are used.

I just had my 2023 55" TCL S series TV "die" on me. The TV would appear to turn on and respond to remote inputs with sound effects, except nothing would be on the screen. Apparently this is a fairly common issue with these TVs, and seems suspiciously correlated to when system updates are installedI'm very tempted to do as others have suggested and keep my next TV off the internet, and just use a much more easily replaceable streaming box instead of the native "smart TV" features
Fairly typical symptoms of a backlight failure

It's already gotten bad enough, but Fox Corporation has agreed to acquire Roku in a $22 billion deal announced on June 15, 2026. It might get worse.

Just note, Roku released several updates recently that have increased ads, added sound to ads, reduced customization of home, broken live tv pause, decreased reception of ota channels, and made it so OTA channels don't work without internet. I've loved the roku platform- till this month. Now its a monitor, not a tv.
Thanks Fox, for buying then messing up a good thing.

Good buy or no?
Likely not because the software updates from Roku have ruined things.

I am migrating everything to Google TV, and really liking it so far. So, no doubt, Google will swoop in and ruin it within months. Onn 4k pro is a good performing, cheap option and it seems to integrate really well with just about any TV.

I had. TCL with Roku TV built in get bricked from an automatic update. Roku not TCL would take responsibility. Pointing at the other company to fix. My workaround is to plug a Roku stick into the hdmi and basically use the tv as a monitor.

Pretty sad and disappointing that the tv broke from a software issue that is completely fixable but they wouldn't help. I tried to update the firmware via a usb but wasn't able to.
out of curiousity, did the tcl logo show up and then your screen went black (but sound still plays). this is my issue right now

OTA channels do still work without internet, you just have to stare at a grey screen for about a minute before it shows the channel. After that, it works normally. Note that it did seem like reception was worse without internet but can't explain why. Could have been the storms in the area as that's why I didn't have internet

Same thing happened to a hisense roku TV of mine (except it was much worse because it was in a boot loop). Ended up getting it fixed though with their support (I was able to download an update which they emailed me and did it manually). Also had the same issues a lot of others are complaining about with a different hisense TV with a backlight burning out (one single LED took out the whole screen).

I had my hisense do this recently and I wound up taking it apart and getting replacement LED back lights. Definitely didn't go back together like it was, but definitely was cheaper than getting a new tv.
Yup, was just saying this above to someone else (mine was a hisense, but same story). It was one single LED which took out the whole display, guess they're wired in series. Mine worked fine when I tested it before I got it all back together but cracked the screen in the process of getting it all back together.
