Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I've been debating one of these. I have a full sized ultrasonic cleaner I use for tools, gun parts, etc. While of course I wasn't going to drop my retainers in there directly, but I have heard some people will pour their retainer cleaner in a ziplock bag (maybe I'll double them), dropping that in the tank. Anyone tried that? I would imagine that would do a much better job and not contribute to yet another single use device in my house for a periodic deep cleaning.

$12 is silly cheap on the other hand, just wondering how well this actually works and the low review count (high Vine count) isn't providing much insight.

*Semi related....I've also seen videos of people doing that with more specialized cleaners so they aren't dumping a gallon of cleaner into their full size ultrasonic, just filling the tank with normal water then adding the item to be cleaned and cleaner into a ziplock bag. That way they can save on cleaner cost , even saving it for another use later, and instantly go from one type of cleaner to another. Especially for gun stuff and jewelry since the finishes can be so sensitive to certain chemicals (especially with heat). For the most part I just YOLO it with watered down Simple Green Wink

/end rant

I have seen these videos and tried doing it myself. I've put dish soap and water into a small plastic bag with jewelry to be cleaned. Put that in my usual large ultrasonic cleaner and ran it with regular water in there. It worked pretty well.

$12 is too cheap to pass up. I've always wanted an ultra sonic cleaner for cleaning controller parts.

If you have retainers or Invisalign, buy it.

I use mine daily. Just watch for the water getting a little warm - that's bad for plastic retainers and aligners as it softens the plastic.

I have an almost identical unit from a previous slickdeal, and wish it was this cheap.

I've owned the Zima Pod Pro and 2 similar generic 42khz/45khz Chinese retainer cleaners and I honestly can't tell if any of them have ever done anything. Yes, they all pass the tinfoil test but I've never once seen any significant flaking or discoloration of the water which you would expect.

If nothing else, these ultrasonic dental pods do a good job at making you feel like you're doing something to maintain your brux guard. My dentist said the same thing when I asked about it. They have one in the office they use to clean retainers/brux guards on request but there isn't enough evidence to confirm or deny if these actually do anything detectable.

Anyways, just keep your expectations tempered.

You're not going to have much crap on brux guards to turn the water murky... if you do, you're doing something seriously wrong, like wearing it with food still in your mouth. It kills germs naturally. Not sure I'd use the uv function on a mouth guard though... could cause it to yellow faster over time.
