This RX 9070 GRE sits in a tricky middle ground, with strong 1440p performance and enough 12GB VRAM for current games and light AI work. It is described as roughly 25 percent faster than an average 9060 XT at 1440p with light to medium ray tracing, and some comparisons put it well ahead of older cards like the 3070 Ti. The main concern is longevity, since 12GB can become a bottleneck in newer titles and heavier ray tracing can narrow the gap. It looks best for buyers who want a solid midrange step up without chasing the top tier.

  • The card can deliver a sizable performance uplift across the board compared with older Radeon options, including claims of 30% or more faster results.

  • The card may benefit from DLSS features to improve real-world frame rates in supported games.

  • The 12GB VRAM configuration can be useful for AI workloads where extra VRAM matters.

  • The card may run cooler and use less power than some comparable NVIDIA options, which can help overall case temperatures.

  • AAA gaming performance can be limited on low settings with frame drops after upgrading from a 3070 Ti, even when paired with a 7600X CPU.

  • The 12GB VRAM can become a bottleneck in newer titles, which may lead to stuttering when games push past the VRAM threshold.

  • The performance gap versus competing GPUs can shrink at higher ray tracing settings, which can reduce the practical advantage in demanding RT scenarios.

  • The upgrade may feel minimal for some 3070 Ti owners, with claims of roughly 5% or less improvement and advice to target a higher-tier model for real gains.

Thinking about upgrading from a GTX 1080 for this for 1440p gaming. Thoughts on this vs a 5070?

Dude, save your money. Very minimal improvement, like 5% or less. If you have a 3070 Ti you need to get the 9070 XT for any real gains. Those are about $700 at Microcenter. Ya, the GPU market continues to be overpriced and suck for even the mid tier category.
It's 30%+ faster across the board. https://www.techpowerup.com/revie...se/32.html

Worthy upgrade from a 3070ti? It's starting to show it's age on AAA games like spiderman 2, I can only play on low settings (60-80fps) and it drops frames pretty constantly with a 7600X CPU.
might want to check power limit setting and make sure its set to 100% or higher. that said, i would get rid of it while u can still get a decent price....many are unloading 3070 series... the 8gb vram will become a huge bottleneck with newer titles....i was able to sell the 3070ti and bought a used 4070 and ended up only paying net $130 more. you get a nice boost in performance especially with rt titles. not only that, it comes with additional 4gb vram and dlss3 with fg which is a game changer not to mention better encoder including av1. what most people don't mention is that it does all of this while using much less power. it uses ~100w less power(even less undervolted) resulting in much lower temps on the card and in turn lower temps for all the components in the case in general.

is 9060 xt 16gb better choice?
It's a weird situational situation. It's like 25% faster at 1440p light to medium ray tracing for like 20 bucks more than the average 9060 xt at this price, but higher ray tracing closes that gap a bit and anything that breaks the 12gb threshold will be a stuttery mess, which is extremely rare now but will become much more common when next gen launches and targets those machines as the kinda default performance profile (though at that point the 9060 xts raster will start requiring turning down stuff anyway).

For AI workloads due to the extra VRAM, for gaming, the 12GB is enough for now, and with the ram crisis, I can't see developers going nuts with system requirements if they want to move units.

Oddly, I thought one smoked copium instead of drinking it. You learn something new everyday.
