The Sonos Roam is a compact portable speaker that sounds consistent within the Sonos lineup and works well as a shower or travel speaker, especially if you plan to use AirPlay and skip the Sonos app after setup. The hardware gets praise, and the battery life can stretch to about two weeks with daily shower use. The main concerns are the original Roam's UI and app problems, plus reports of premature battery failures and units that never power back on after fully dying. It feels like a small Sonos speaker with useful wireless convenience, but reliability and software history remain the big watchouts.
Common Questions (5)
It can be very good for daily use, including shower use, with voice control, AirPlay, and roughly two weeks between charges in one report. Other comments describe unit-specific problems, UI issues, and disappointing reliability, so the experience can depend heavily on the individual speaker.
The Roam is a compact Sonos speaker with decent sound and AirPlay, but several comments recommend spending more for a Move or waiting for a Move 2 sale. The Move 2 is around $300 refurbished, so the upgrade is a much bigger jump in price.
No. With AirPlay, it can be used without the Sonos app after initial setup, which makes it easier to skip the app for everyday playback.
The comments point to this being a better deal for the Roam Gen 2. The Gen 1 is associated with poor UI and premature battery failures, so buyers specifically call out the newer version as the safer pick.
Yes. A reported failure mode is that if the battery runs all the way down, the speaker may never power back on again, and some owners have gone through multiple replacements.

I gave my Roam to my daughter. Told her to connect to it via AirPlay so she doesn't even bother with the app. She doesn't even know an app exists.
I have a ton of Sonos products. S2 & S1 compatible speakers.
I have 3 stereo sets of Play 5's that I connected an Apple AirPort Express 2 to each pair to Airplay to. I rarely use the S1 app except when I'm playing music with a Sonos amp connected to a stereo pair of Orb Audio speakers (2 per pair) with sub. I have a spare Airport that I'll eventually connect it to.
I have a couple Arcs, a Beam, a Ray all paired with Play: 1's for surround and either a Sub or Sub Mini. I also rarely use the S2 app except for setup as each set are for TVs, so just volume control via remote. And if I really wanted to play music, I can Airplay to them.
