This Squier FSR Stratocaster H is a budget Strat built around a single bridge humbucker, so it leans toward straightforward rock and metal tones more than broad Strat versatility. The bridge pickup is the main draw here, with tone control and amp or modeler settings covering most of the shaping. At this price, the appeal is value, but setup quality can be hit or miss, with reports of intonation problems and tuning instability on similar Squier versions. A simple, low cost option if bridge pickup tones are enough.

Common Questions (4)

  • The bridge pickup is the one many players use most of the time, and some use tone controls or amp/modeler snapshots to shape the sound instead of switching pickups often. The neck pickup still matters for cleaner tones and styles like blues or jazz.

  • Yes, this model is a single-humbucker Strat, so it has fewer tone options than HSS or SSS versions. It can still be enough if the player mainly wants bridge-pickup sounds for hard rock or metal, but it is less versatile for clean, blues, or Strat-style tones.

  • Adorama has a return policy, which matters because some buyers expect to gamble on a cheaper guitar and send it back if the first one is a dud. That makes the low price less risky if you are willing to inspect and return a bad unit.

  • Some units can have serious setup problems, including poor intonation and tuning stability. Reported fixes included fret leveling and edge filing, but the intonation issue was described as the main deal-breaker.

You get what you pay for. People like the deal because of the price, but there are so many better deals for double the money and you won't have to send the guitar back to find a gem. At least you know what you were looking for. Most of these will just a guitar like this just sitting in a corner if they get a dud.
Adorama has a return policy. And NO, you do not "get what you pay for." Guitarists get ripped off all the time for buying more expensive guitars that aren't any better and snake-oil pickups that don't sound any better.

I disagree on getting a HSS. Most beginners aren't going to use anything but the bridge pickup, considering that most players, in general, don't use anything but the bridge pickup. I've been playing for almost 30 years, and the only time I use a different pickup than the bridge is when I switch to the neck for sweep picking. Middle pickups are almost pointless and will most definitely get in the way of a beginner. It's why so many guitars that do come with more than one pickup. just have a bridge and neck pickup (usually humbuckers), and skip the pointless middle one.
Everyone has different tastes. I mainly play the neck pickup on my strats and only use the middle and bridge pickups for position 2.

LOL! If your experience was normal, guitar manufacturers wouldn't even bother with two pickups, let alone the three a versatile Strat comes with. And if you don't understand the 2 and 4 positions on a single coil Strat after "playing for almost 30 years", then that is just #sad. So is getting a pointless double humbucker Strat.Really bad advice.
Aww, poor baby got emotional and went straight for the insults. Typical.

This depends entirely on the player and the style though. For hard rock or metal, bridge humbucker is common for dirty tones, but even there you'll see neck pickups being used, especially for clean tones. In styles like blues or jazz you'll see the neck pickup used very frequently -- jazz guitar is all about the neck humbucker, and the classic Strat blues sound is a neck single-coil. Basically the answer will depend on what the beginner wants to play and sound like.
