Can someone compare these to the Maxwell 2 from Audeze? I know they're different products but curious about it.

I assume there would be fairly heavy and hot for longer listening sessions?

Monolith by Monoprice M1060C Over Ear Closed Back Planar Magnetic Headphones get the most votes from the head-fi community and are many times on sale for close to this price. Yes Planer HPs are heavy, but the sound quality is worth the listen IMO.

My understanding is that they're a downgrade from the previous version, the 1060C (which I do have). Not on sale unfortunately: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=29513

These headphones come with a 5 year warranty, so the quality is likely fine

Different sound signatures. Depends on what sounds good to you. I have the 1060 and hd600. to be honest, i prefer the 1060 sound. but it's open, so ppl next to you can hear what you're listening to.

Yes they are but I have to admit I'm not overly familiar with the 1070c. I had the original 1060c and the Audeze version they originally copied. The biggest difference is monoprice 50 HZ Audeze 60 HZ and Fazors in the more recent Audeze. But my favorite planner headphones I built myself as a hybrid using enclosed Audeze lcd-2 with replacement original monoprice open back planar drivers with Audeze Fazors, lambskin pads and thicker insulating foam. I understand that's not what these are and my hybrid is completely one of a kind but these are solid headphones listed yhat sound fine to most as is. I still have a set or two of the 1060c somewhere. Years later using AI I fed into AI what I did even though I didn't realize it until originally hearing them that I created the perfect set of closed back planar headphones, LoL. Audeze's next example was more like the tweaks I made to mine. But I will admit I've tried the LCD-XC and it is a little lighter and more comfortable I didn't bother rebuilding them I just sold them as is after playing with them this more what monoprice was copying with these. I have LCD 2, 3 and 4 and still prefer my hybrids. If anyone thinks about tearing apart a set of planar headphones I suggest you watch a few videos first. The magnets are extremely strong and they will jump as the glue that holds them gets old/ brittle. It will ruin a diaphragm faster than the eye can see it happening. Years ago I purchased a pallet of return planar headphones from Amazon. I probably still have 10 sets I kept just for parts after repairing and selling the rest. I guess what this long width is supposed to saying is I'd get the original closed back instead. Lol

These seem to be at end of life this is what monoprice does when they're clearancing something out. I believe they are moving on to Air Motion Transformer (AMT) ribbon driver technology and away from planar.

While the Monoprice M1070C and the Audeze Maxwell 2 are entirely different categories of headphones, comparing them highlights a massive generational divide in closed-back planar design.

Here is a practical breakdown of how the actual listening experience and usability compare:

1. Sound Signature: Analog Warmth vs. Digital Precision
• Monoprice M1070C: This behaves like a massive, warm analog room speaker. It focuses on huge, cavernous sub-bass extension (down to 5Hz) and a very thick, rich, forward midrange. However, because it lacks internal waveguides, the upper frequencies can sound a bit uneven or peaky out of the box, sometimes requiring thicker acoustic foam or pad-swapping to smooth out.
• Audeze Maxwell 2: This sounds like a razor-sharp, flat studio monitor. It uses integrated Fazor waveguides and a built-in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to iron out physical acoustic flaws. Vocals and dialogue are crystalline and perfectly liquid. The bass doesn't have the same deep, echoing cavern-rumble as the massive 106mm Monoprice driver, but it hits with a blazing-fast, tight, tactical punch that never muddies the midrange.

2. Power & Portability: Stationary Desk Asset vs. Mobile Freedom
• Monoprice M1070C: This is a classic "desktop station." It is highly inefficient (60 Ohms / 97dB sensitivity) and absolutely requires a dedicated high-current desktop amplifier to wake up the drivers. Plugged into a standard phone or laptop jack, the soundstage collapses and the bass turns limp. Weighing a massive 642 grams, it is built strictly for sitting relatively still in a desk chair.
• Audeze Maxwell 2: This is a completely self-contained active system. All the amplifiers, digital converters, and batteries are built directly into the ear cups. It sounds perfectly optimized and identical whether you connect via Bluetooth 5.3 on your phone, use the ultra-low latency 2.4GHz wireless dongle on a PC, or run a passive 3.5mm wire.

3. How You Tune Them: Physical Modding vs. App EQ
• With the M1070C, changing the sound flavor requires physical work—swapping between the included lambskin/velour pads or manually adjusting internal damping materials.
• With the Maxwell 2, tuning is entirely digital. You simply open up the Audeze HQ app on your phone or PC and instantly toggle between different preset EQ curves to alter the sound on the fly.

The Verdict:
If you want a heavy, fun, deeply bass-heavy analog desktop headphone to chain to a powerful dedicated amplifier stack, the M1070C is an excellent raw performance value (especially at its current clearance pricing). If you want modern, pinpoint spatial imaging, zero amplifier requirements, crisp vocal isolation, and wireless convenience, the Maxwell 2 is the vastly superior piece of modern all-in-one engineering.
