The Monoprice M1070C is a heavy closed back planar headphone aimed at big, warm sound and strong bass, with a presentation that draws comparisons to Audeze LCD 2 and even the original 1060C. The 60 ohm design is described as inefficient and best paired with a high current desktop amp, while the included five year warranty and improved construction suggest better durability than earlier Monoprice planars. Comfort is decent, but the tuning is not seen as a clear upgrade over the 1060C, and the weight and long term maintenance concerns remain part of the tradeoff.

  • Planar headphone hobbyists who like to tinker, because the sound can be improved with pad swaps, damping changes, or driver experiments.

  • Buyers prioritizing strong sound per dollar, because the line has a long track record of punching above its weight sonically.

  • Desk listeners who want a warm, bass-heavy planar sound, because the headphone delivers huge sub-bass and a thick midrange.

  • Listeners who prefer a fuller, LCD2-like presentation, because the tuning is described as closer to that sound than to a brighter gaming headset.

  • People who want a lightweight headphone for long sessions, because the planar design is heavy and can feel cumbersome.

  • Owners who want a low-maintenance headphone, because the planar models can develop loose screws, cracking, and connector failures over time.

  • Listeners expecting a clear upgrade from the previous version, because this model is described as a downgrade and not much of a step up.

  • Commuters or laptop-only listeners, because it is highly inefficient and needs a high-current desktop amplifier to sound right.

While the Monoprice M1070C and the Audeze Maxwell 2 are entirely different categories of headphones, comparing them highlights a massive generational divide in closed-back planar design. Here is a practical breakdown of how the actual listening experience and usability compare:1. Sound Signature: Analog Warmth vs. Digital Precision• Monoprice M1070C: This behaves like a massive, warm analog room speaker. It focuses on huge, cavernous sub-bass extension (down to 5Hz) and a very thick, rich, forward midrange. However, because it lacks internal waveguides, the upper frequencies can sound a bit uneven or peaky out of the box, sometimes requiring thicker acoustic foam or pad-swapping to smooth out.• Audeze Maxwell 2: This sounds like a razor-sharp, flat studio monitor. It uses integrated Fazor waveguides and a built-in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to iron out physical acoustic flaws. Vocals and dialogue are crystalline and perfectly liquid. The bass doesn't have the same deep, echoing cavern-rumble as the massive 106mm Monoprice driver, but it hits with a blazing-fast, tight, tactical punch that never muddies the midrange.2. Power & Portability: Stationary Desk Asset vs. Mobile Freedom• Monoprice M1070C: This is a classic "desktop station." It is highly inefficient (60 Ohms / 97dB sensitivity) and absolutely requires a dedicated high-current desktop amplifier to wake up the drivers. Plugged into a standard phone or laptop jack, the soundstage collapses and the bass turns limp. Weighing a massive 642 grams, it is built strictly for sitting relatively still in a desk chair. • Audeze Maxwell 2: This is a completely self-contained active system. All the amplifiers, digital converters, and batteries are built directly into the ear cups. It sounds perfectly optimized and identical whether you connect via Bluetooth 5.3 on your phone, use the ultra-low latency 2.4GHz wireless dongle on a PC, or run a passive 3.5mm wire. 3. How You Tune Them: Physical Modding vs. App EQ• With the M1070C, changing the sound flavor requires physical work—swapping between the included lambskin/velour pads or manually adjusting internal damping materials.• With the Maxwell 2, tuning is entirely digital. You simply open up the Audeze HQ app on your phone or PC and instantly toggle between different preset EQ curves to alter the sound on the fly.The Verdict:If you want a heavy, fun, deeply bass-heavy analog desktop headphone to chain to a powerful dedicated amplifier stack, the M1070C is an excellent raw performance value (especially at its current clearance pricing). If you want modern, pinpoint spatial imaging, zero amplifier requirements, crisp vocal isolation, and wireless convenience, the Maxwell 2 is the vastly superior piece of modern all-in-one engineering.

It is AI. I was asking it related questions and just copied your question over and that's what it spit out. I was thinking of getting these just for the drivers since they fit the original 1060c and Audeze to play with.

I would say if somebody gets these to go ahead and look into 3D printing some Audeze style Fazors and they would perform a bit better.

i've had 4 pair of monoprice headphones over the years and they always punch well above their weight in sound. unfortunately, they all have also broken with careful handling and 0 drops
You more than likely had at least one pair of the original 1060 with the MMCX connectors that were prone to failure and sold off on eBay cheaply by audiophile types. Monoprice's manufacturers would drill the holes out for the connector in the original headphones and within months depending on where they were shipped to and stored, sometimes regardless of use they would then dry out and crack l. Usually close to the MMCX connectors but they had also fit the huge drivers in so tight that when the wood would shrink and dry there was no room for the shrinkage.l at all not just for the headphone jacks. Of course the screws/bolts would back out and get loose sometimes fall out of the headbands. They are so heavy that they do take a little bit of maintenance after purchase. I use mostly Audeze for planar so I purchased a bunch of quality headphone stands like the Room's stands that are sized for specific models. I'm not saying you abuse them but once you hang them properly they really do last longer.

I got a pair of these the last time they were on sale and honestly they aren't that great. They felt comfortable at least, but not that much or a step up from the previous pair. Construction is definitely better.

This or hd600/hd650's ?
both. the HDs are kind of like 'reference' headphones that everyone compares everything to...

Anyone ever compared these to the HiFiman planar headphones in the $100-200 range? E.g. Sundara?
