Similarly while ordering for stuff for my Kid's dorm, i am not finding Costco prices competitive compared to other like dove bodywash (after adding coupon etc) , Pretty sure this was not the case last year

It's hard to beat HBA item prices when you can combine the S&S price, a 30-40% off your first S&S coupon and sometimes a stackable offer on top of that such as earn a $10 Amazon Credit when you buy 3.
In this case, the item is already reduced off reg price, the S&S takes off more and then the third 6 pack is basically free which is 33% off the lowered price on 3.
While Costco may offer good everyday and/or sales prices you don't really see these kinds of stackable discounts that you can pile on to a sales price. I think that is basically the issue. and it is very possible, last year when you were shopping, these types of offers weren't in play on Amazon, thus Costco may have been the cheaper choice. (not sure if your kid was in college last year)
