Various retailers have Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (eBook) on sale for $1.99.

Thanks to Community Member Kyven for finding this deal.

Available Retailers: About this book:
  • Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.
  • Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human—and one of those rare books that renews the idea of what a novel can do.

Avoided this one for the longest time thinking it would be too difficult of a read to really enjoy, but when I finally gave it a shot I ended up loving it so much that I read it a 2nd time shortly after finishing it.

What's the point in owning this if I can't display it prominently on my bookshelf for guests to see?

I can't recommend this in eBook format, the insane amount of footnotes and asides make it unbearable imo. get a hardcopy. just my 2c

I've heard that the ebook version has the footnotes in pop-ups, or something like that, so they're actually really easy to reference as you go.

With that said, I wonder if that defeats the purpose somewhat of the form...

(I don't know, I haven't read it)

I don't have this version of the ebook but would imagine it works the same as the version I have where it has links to the footnotes and then a link back to the page you came from at the end of the footnote, which made it easy enough for me. For any first time readers make sure you don't skip the footnotes, some are more important than others but they definitely shouldn't be skipped.
