The Sundara is a planar magnetic over ear headphone best known for wide soundstage, fast response, and strong instrument separation, with especially good mids and a warmer, more intimate presentation that suits rock and gaming. Comfort is a recurring strength, and replacement pads and other third party accessories are available. It can run straight from a laptop or tablet, though an amplifier or DAC amp brings out more of what it can do. Main drawbacks are the lack of a microphone and inline volume controls, plus AliExpress pricing and shipping hassles.
Common Questions (5)
Yes, this is far below typical past pricing: commenters paid around $150 to $349 for the same headphones, and one noted a used pair cost about $200 years ago. At roughly $82.50 to $86, it is described as a strong buy for a planar headphone.
They have a wide soundstage, fast planar response, and strong instrument separation, which works well for music and single-player games. For FPS pinpointing, some prefer Sennheiser models for more accurate enemy location, while Sundara is often favored for rock and a more natural, neutral presentation.
They can be used directly from a laptop, tablet, or computer, but they sound better with an amplifier and may benefit from a DAC/amp combo. A dedicated amp is not required for basic use, but it can improve performance and volume headroom.
No microphone or inline volume controls are built in. If you need voice chat, a separate mod mic can be added, and volume is typically handled by your PC or DAC/amp instead.
Yes. Registering the headphones on HIFIMAN's warranty page adds an extra 6 months of warranty coverage.

Edit: The link isn't working for me. It opens a new tab and then immediately closes the tab.

I would have just requested a replacement, but that's not how Aliexpress works. Despite clearly being lost/stolen, you can't do anything until 30 days have expired. Then it's just credit/refund.

I have a small head so I have to use spacers for the Sundaras. I don't have that problem with Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic cans.

These will work fine just plugging them into your computer/player, but they really shine when you use an amplifier. I love the Schitt stack, the Magni/Modi combination (DAC + Amp) is a perfect compliment and they sound awesome.
You can honestly tell the difference in music. It's not just placebo.
EDIT: Scratch that, not out of stock, AliExpress just refuses to process my credit card for some reason. I tried a second time with the same result. I eventually get a message that says the payment was not processed because I waived verification, even though I was never prompted for verification...
And now the price went up to $94. I really hate trying to buy from AliExpress.
EDIT2: Finally got it to work after multiple price fluctuations. Each browser on my desktop showed a different price, all of them being higher than what was shown on mobile. Had to use PayPal instead of a credit card but the final price for me after tax was $72.22 (base price was $80.59).
I've been using a set of Phillips SHP9500 headphones for around 10 years and have never listened to anything else besides super cheap headphones so I'm curious to see how the Sundaras compare.

edit: I forgot how batshit Aliexpress's pricing is - in an incognito window I see 119.77 and when I click that link I see 141.24
