The Sundara is a planar magnetic over ear headphone best known for wide soundstage, fast response, and strong instrument separation, with especially good mids and a warmer, more intimate presentation that suits rock and gaming. Comfort is a recurring strength, and replacement pads and other third party accessories are available. It can run straight from a laptop or tablet, though an amplifier or DAC amp brings out more of what it can do. Main drawbacks are the lack of a microphone and inline volume controls, plus AliExpress pricing and shipping hassles.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, this is far below typical past pricing: commenters paid around $150 to $349 for the same headphones, and one noted a used pair cost about $200 years ago. At roughly $82.50 to $86, it is described as a strong buy for a planar headphone.

  • They have a wide soundstage, fast planar response, and strong instrument separation, which works well for music and single-player games. For FPS pinpointing, some prefer Sennheiser models for more accurate enemy location, while Sundara is often favored for rock and a more natural, neutral presentation.

  • They can be used directly from a laptop, tablet, or computer, but they sound better with an amplifier and may benefit from a DAC/amp combo. A dedicated amp is not required for basic use, but it can improve performance and volume headroom.

  • No microphone or inline volume controls are built in. If you need voice chat, a separate mod mic can be added, and volume is typically handled by your PC or DAC/amp instead.

  • Yes. Registering the headphones on HIFIMAN's warranty page adds an extra 6 months of warranty coverage.

It seems like there's a number of Hifiman cans on sale - is this a better deal? The Hifiman Edition XS

edit: I forgot how batshit Aliexpress's pricing is - in an incognito window I see 119.77 and when I click that link I see 141.24
I have no experience with either (have the Sundara on order), but for my needs, I feel like the Sundara is the better option. From the reviews I've read, Sundara is great for rock. It's warmer and has a more intimate sound stage. Also has great mids that rock loves. And is a better head fit for most people. If rock isn't your thing, then XS may be superior. Rock seems to be the outlier that, at least on paper, is better on Sundara.

Fiio is the best deal (I have 2) but if you want to buy something made in America, I also have Schiit Fulla which has been great and is my main DAC on my PC.

One of the Fiio's I have is portable with a built in battery, which is pretty cool because I'm always traveling for work but the other just needs usb power so I can use that with a battery bank.

They have FIIO FT7 listed for 236, but I don't think it's valid. When I add to cart and try to check out it says "none in stock" Man that would be a sweet deal.

Wowsers! I paid $349 for these 5 years ago from Apos. No point in selling mine now... I feel ripped off, but they are very comfortable and sound great though. I paired them with an SMSL SP200 amp.

How does this compare with Sennheiser headphone specially 599,600 or 650 ?
Different sound signature pros and cons I believe those Senns are dynamic drivers vs planar magnetic drivers in this one . Also depends on your use case for gaming I'd pick a dynamic driver for various music listening I'd pick a hifiman. I owned years ago the edition Xs and it was amazing for music

I hate AliExpress Dynamic pricing. I bought the HE6se v2 for $369 then used the code form this post for $12 off.... awesome. Competed the order and AliExpress booted me to a page showing the exact headphone I just bought for cheaper and with a different code for $40 off $239+. So I ended up buying it for $317 shipped. You can see from the screenshot how stupid this whole experience is.

Edition XS is likely the best headphone for its price now that Hifiman is blowing them out. The $120 sold here is sold out now (like you noticed), but its $209 direct from Hifiman... but its also only $250 from Amazon now.

It legit debuted at over $1000+ though so if you weant a crazy good headphone... its worth the full ($250) price and the lower you get it at, the better.

I'd buy some replacement ear pads now though... that goes for every Hifiman purchase.
