The Sundara is a planar magnetic over ear headphone best known for wide soundstage, fast response, and strong instrument separation, with especially good mids and a warmer, more intimate presentation that suits rock and gaming. Comfort is a recurring strength, and replacement pads and other third party accessories are available. It can run straight from a laptop or tablet, though an amplifier or DAC amp brings out more of what it can do. Main drawbacks are the lack of a microphone and inline volume controls, plus AliExpress pricing and shipping hassles.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, this is far below typical past pricing: commenters paid around $150 to $349 for the same headphones, and one noted a used pair cost about $200 years ago. At roughly $82.50 to $86, it is described as a strong buy for a planar headphone.

  • They have a wide soundstage, fast planar response, and strong instrument separation, which works well for music and single-player games. For FPS pinpointing, some prefer Sennheiser models for more accurate enemy location, while Sundara is often favored for rock and a more natural, neutral presentation.

  • They can be used directly from a laptop, tablet, or computer, but they sound better with an amplifier and may benefit from a DAC/amp combo. A dedicated amp is not required for basic use, but it can improve performance and volume headroom.

  • No microphone or inline volume controls are built in. If you need voice chat, a separate mod mic can be added, and volume is typically handled by your PC or DAC/amp instead.

  • Yes. Registering the headphones on HIFIMAN's warranty page adds an extra 6 months of warranty coverage.

My brother got these from last time it hit front page. I was surprised to learn that you can't increase/decrease audio and that there is no microphone. Those are deal breakers for me. How is everyone else so appreciative of these? What am I missing?
Because some people buy headphones for the sound they produce. Anyway edition xs is back for limited stock.

Although I already have the Hifiman HE560, I still ordered this for $76 plus tax with the $12 coupon. Can't beat the price. I use a Monoprice THX and the iFi Audio Micro iDSD Signature Finale for my HE560 so that's what I'm using for this. I have the Schiit Stack but I hardly use it anymore. Excellent deal !

Wasn't expecting to buy another pair of headphones, but $80 for planars is too tempting to pass up. Hopefully Hifiman has upped their QA game since I bought the he400i awhile back.

Different sound signature pros and cons I believe those Senns are dynamic drivers vs magnetic drivers in this one . Also depends on your use case for gaming I'd pick a dynamic driver for various music listening I'd pick a hifiman. I owned years ago the edition Xs and it was amazing for music
Im the exact opposite, I prefer the Sundara for games and Sennheiser for music, as they have a more natural/neutral sound.

Depends on how much you want to spend. For relatively inexpensive you can get a Fosi Audio (K5, K7, etc) or Creative G8. If you want to spend bigger many options from Schiit, Fiio, or Creative X5. Just type in any of those brands and you will get tons of options at different price points. Creative has plenty of nifty software gimmicks for gaming and surround, but also can have driver issues.
I personally use the Soundblaster G6 with these headphones and no complaints in the year or longer that ive been using them. Also used the G6 with Drop/Sennheiser 58x, before I got the Sundaras , for a year with no complaints

good luck finding similar audio quality on anything with a Mic without spending at least 5x the price, even though Hifiman and Asus teamed up for some headphones this year based on the Ananda, but again they are $439.99 direct from Asus. but seem to be on sale at best buy atm for $230, might have to jump on those myself at that price lol

why would they be deal breakers ? Are they required features to operate a headphone ? They're not . Typically these are not features in premium headphones because the assumption is you will be using these with a PC or in a home audio setup where you already have separate devices handling these things of arguably much better quality than a cheap attached mic and plastic volume button especially since a Dac/amp combo is required to properly enjoy these headphones

You can buy a mod mic and stick it in these if needed.

Most (if not nearly all) headphones in this class do not have those features. Those features are prevalent in lower quality disposable headphones even if they cost a lot.

These are audiophile grade planar magnetic wired headphones. It is assumed you are using them with appropriate equipment to drive them. A volume knob doesn't even make sense on this type of headphone.

They are good for gaming though due to the great sound stage.

i could see that. I could never reeally accurately pinpoint enemies with the sundara. Sennheiser on the other hand was laser accurate. otherwise in single player games, both were great.

Would the Fiio Gigas 1 be a decent paring with this for home use?
