The GL.iNet Flint 3 is a tri band WiFi 7 home router that also works well as a travel router or private VPN hub. It has 2.5 GbE ports, OpenWrt support is available in vanilla form, and the router can run ad blocker and Windscribe VPN cleanly. The main cautions are that the Flint 3 chip is seen as a step down from Flint 2, custom firmware options are still limited, and GL.iNet firmware may be locked down. Shipping to the United States is also blocked in some cases, with return logistics tied to China or AliExpress warehouse rules.
Common Questions (5)
It can be used for travel, but it is mainly a home router because of its size and weight. It can also act as a VPN server or connect through WireGuard, Tailscale, or supported VPN providers in the router interface.
The listing can show that it cannot ship to a US address. An incognito AliExpress.us search workaround was suggested, but clicking through a search result can still show 'cannot ship to USA.'
Vanilla OpenWrt is available for the GL-BE9300, but it is not yet merged into the main OpenWrt tree. The Flint 3 generation is also described as having fewer custom firmware options than the Flint 2.
AliExpress can offer a free 90-day return to its Texas or New Jersey warehouse if you do not use the seller return option. The seller-side return path is the one flagged as costly because it can require shipping to China.
It can run ad blocking and Windscribe VPN without issues. For a dedicated VPN server, the GL-MT5000 is reported to deliver faster speeds.

Fortunately for me, it seems this deal is dead 😂

I currently use this as the home router and use a Slate AX as my travel router. If you mean VPN with the travel router to your home router, typically you have two options to. Wireguard is the better option if your ISP can support it (mine doesnt). The fallback is tailscale. If you mean connect to a VPN company, some companies are supported directly in the router interface.
