The GL.iNet Flint 3 is a tri band WiFi 7 home router that also works well as a travel router or private VPN hub. It has 2.5 GbE ports, OpenWrt support is available in vanilla form, and the router can run ad blocker and Windscribe VPN cleanly. The main cautions are that the Flint 3 chip is seen as a step down from Flint 2, custom firmware options are still limited, and GL.iNet firmware may be locked down. Shipping to the United States is also blocked in some cases, with return logistics tied to China or AliExpress warehouse rules.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can be used for travel, but it is mainly a home router because of its size and weight. It can also act as a VPN server or connect through WireGuard, Tailscale, or supported VPN providers in the router interface.

  • The listing can show that it cannot ship to a US address. An incognito AliExpress.us search workaround was suggested, but clicking through a search result can still show 'cannot ship to USA.'

  • Vanilla OpenWrt is available for the GL-BE9300, but it is not yet merged into the main OpenWrt tree. The Flint 3 generation is also described as having fewer custom firmware options than the Flint 2.

  • AliExpress can offer a free 90-day return to its Texas or New Jersey warehouse if you do not use the seller return option. The seller-side return path is the one flagged as costly because it can require shipping to China.

  • It can run ad blocking and Windscribe VPN without issues. For a dedicated VPN server, the GL-MT5000 is reported to deliver faster speeds.

Thats funny. The website she seems to be advertising/endorsing in that reel seems to be a custom branded gl.inet device. My guess is that its a Beryl AX branded with the a sticker.

Just a headsup though, in your use case, the bottleneck will be the speed of hotel wifi. For the travel, I would recommend using Beryl AX/Slate AX since that should be enough for most hotel wifi's

Is this a travel router or regular home router? If it's a home router can I user it for private vpn with another travel router?
It's a home router, yes you can use it to be a vpn server and connect using a travel router. You won't get the fastest speed though, if you want a dedicated VPN server GL-MT5000 gets faster speeds

Haven't seen many deals on the MT5000 however, let alone the Flint2 recently. Maybe clearing out the Flint3 for upcoming Flint4 which is in the process of getting FCC certification. Not sure if the MT5000 is considered a router in FCC's eyes if it is acting solely as a VPN gateway behind another router

Almost every deal on AliExpress say item's currently unavailable in your location Frown
Had this same issue earlier when I was trying to order the Sundara headphones. It had both "unable to ship to this address" and I couldn't even add to the cart since it was something like "look for similar items."

Fixed the issue by just clicking around and circling back to the item while logged in. Think opened up a new tab too.

Just went through the DD-WRT experience on another router. FYI, when you make changes on the DD-WRT, don't just 'save & apply'. Do a save and reboot. Especially when messing with the SSH configs and a few other areas.

This product can't be shipped to your address (US).
on the top right hand corner, where it says deliver to US, click and select California. It will then allow to ship to your shipping address.

Their return policy sucks; you pay shipping to China even if it's defective.
AliExpress will let you return it to their Texas or New Jersey warehouse 90 days for free, just don't use seller return.
