The Edition XS is a large open back planar headphone that stands out for huge soundstage, strong detail, and sub bass that feels well above the price. It also responds well to EQ and sounds better from a decent DAC and amp, though it can still play from weaker sources at lower expectations. The main tradeoff is fit, since the loose clamp and oversized headband can slide around without a comfort strap, and the treble can run bright for some. Refurb units have arrived like new, but a few have shown packaging gaps or driver issues.

Common Questions (5)

  • They are very large, light, and have little clamping force, so they can slip off smaller or normal-sized heads. A Capra strap or similar top strap is a common fix, while people with larger heads report a better fit.

  • Many arrive looking like new and sounding excellent, but packaging can be minimal and some units have issues such as loose earcups, missing foam inserts, hinge squeaks, rattles, or even a dead driver. Testing the full frequency range on arrival is important because defects may only show up in bass-heavy tones.

  • It can play directly from a source, but it sounds fuller and more dynamic with an amp or DAC/amp. Several setups mentioned as working well include an Apple dongle, FiiO K5/K11, Qudelix 5K, Atom amp, and Topping D30 + Atom; weak motherboard audio can sound subdued.

  • It has a huge soundstage and strong detail, which works well for single-player and story games, but the presentation is very wide and front imaging can feel weak. That makes it better for music and immersive gaming than for convincing frontal sound in movies or competitive play.

  • The deal price can land around the mid-$80s to low-$90s after coupons, but some codes only work above certain cart totals. Reported totals include $81 before tax with a $12-off coupon, $89.41 after a $20-off code, and about $96.10 with a $12 coupon.

Can't apply the promo code because my subtotal is below $100. It comes out to $98.83 without the code.

Edit: Was able to re-add it to cart and use a different code.

Wow! I remember thinking I got a deal on these for $400 a long time ago but they wouldn't stay on my head, they'd just fall off if I looked down at my mouse real quick ( and I bent these things to give them better clamp) had to I sent them back. If you have an Arrowhead you might not wanna bother with these, seriously! Not a joke.
but for $85 I feel like an idiot not to just buy these when I don't even need them.
These are the best detail headphones ever in my opinion! But it only really works for music, 'cause it's like having giant tubes on each side of your head the sounds sound incredible and distant way out to the sides but very little feeling above and below and absolutely 'nothing' comparatively from the front...
For overall experience and for incredible 'frontal sound' and better bass and even 3D sound, I actually think The Philips Fidelio X2HR wipe the floor with these and are the best headphones ever ever created, (hot take ik) only headphones ever that give good frontal sound and balanced 3D fishbowl of sound on your head.

Link's not working at all for me.

These are absolutely ginormous btw. I have a normal sized head and they would constantly slip off. No clamping force either
Yep! I tried to bend them to clamp to my head but if I even looked down at my mouse they'd fall right off! Absolutely ridiculous, you basically NEED a large head for these to work.

I've always wanted a set of PM cans, but I'm not sure it's going to be THAT much better... Especially requiring a headphone Amp. Anyone with experience, is it truly worth it?
Read my other comments I just dropped, the detail is platinum level and you actually get an acceptable amount of bass, best I ever heard and I think Sennheiser HD800S are trash. Only for music, not for games or movies. Perception of sounds in front of you are non existent everything stretched out left and right.

lol this is absolutely worth it. There was a time I was too poor to keep he1000se and hd800s. Sold them and bought xs(it was around $300 refurb back then) as a downgrade placeholder. Totally sufficient tbh. Super deal at $85.

This is a screaming deal, but can anyone recommend a deal on a closed back Planar? (I'm in a noisy environment.)

Are these okay for single player gaming? Looking to replace fidelio x2 because the earpads are worn out and rather try new sets then pay $40 for earpads

Honestly, I recommend anyone curious about the high end of headphones to insta buy these. I spent $500 years ago for these and didn't regret the purchase until seeing them come down in price this far years later lol.

I A/B tested them against several other popular cans in the 200-300 buck range and generally preferred these for just about everything.

INSANE soundstage, great sub base, and one of the most immersive headphones you can wear for story/single player games.

I own a hd560s (for gaming). And hd6xx for music. Ordered this after reading most reddit comments and review. Claiming howthis are better than even the hd600. After eq can even match $1k headphones sound quality

I heard a lot of people complain about this but capra strap fixes issue. For this price + capra strap it is $110 so still a great deal

I have not tried the ananda stealth but I've read enough about it to know it's the same exact high quality materials just slightly more tuned you could say, less- extreme width, and less of an attempt to make the hardware do bass, the result is a little bit less phasing more focused overlap and frequencies making it sound more focused perhaps more 3D and intimate. It's a trade off, the planar technology just doesn't give me the bass that I want, so it forces me to choose the edition XS, if the Phillips X2's didn't exist and I had to choose between these for one headphone to rule them all you would have to do ananda stealth because the width of the edition XS it's just ridiculous for anything you're trying to view on screen, no ability to imagine the sound is actually coming from in front of you or above you, it's just in your head and way out to the sides.

Furthermore X2HR's- best headphones ever. awesome dynamic bass, perfect 3D first bowl of sound, literally the only headphones ever that have convincing frontal stage!

but you have to get these with them. Stock pads are too itchy

the Atmos headphone app is absolutely worth it BTW, especially with these.
